2.5 year old upset before pre school

Hello, my 2.5 year old DS started pre school last week 2 days per week 9-12. He was teary on his first 2 days and again yesterday but today he’s hidden in the bathroom before it was time to go and cried and cried getting his shoes on and getting him in the car. Thank goodness my DH has taken him because I couldn’t have actually driven him there.
My DD went to the same pre school for 2 years, she loved it! There were bad days obviously when she cried too but nothing like this.
It’s broken my heart and I just don’t want him to go. He can’t talk yet, so he can’t tell me how he feels. He’s bored at home and gets up to mischief and I feel he really needs pre school for his development and socially but this is just awful.
He knows the ladies that run it, one is my friend and the other two from baby sitting and when my DD was there last year.
They say he does enjoy some of it, but does cry at points throughout the morning.
Any words of wisdom? Would I be going backwards taking him out and leaving it a few more months?

It's been 2 mornings - 6 hours! I think you have to expect it's going to take a while to settle and get used to the situation, especially at the moment when kids generally haven't had as many play dates, opportunities to stay away from parents as pre pandemic. I'd keep going and keep being positive about it.

(Full disclosure: this is the first week since Christmas that my DS hasn't been peeled off my leg at the nursery door!)
