Silent Reflux?

DD is 4 weeks old and I think she may have silent reflux. She:

  • squirms/writhes on and off all day, including while feeding
  • is very gassy
  • won't lie on her back, brings her legs up and grunts and cries out
  • will only sleep while held
  • gets hiccups once or twice a day

She's EBF and feeds often, sometimes 30 min between feeds and sometimes up to 2-3 hours. She always seems happy to eat and is gaining weight.

Does this sound like silent reflux? She doesn't cry much but does sometimes seem to be in a lot of discomfort, flailing and squirming around.

It's so hard having a newborn who is struggling. Doesn't sound like typical SR in my experience, especially if she isn't crying a lot. To me it sounds more like trapped wind causing her to have tummy discomfort. Not sleeping without being held is very normal in the third trimester so it's hard to know if it's "caused" by anything.

Is she breast or bottle fed? If breast fed, have you had her latch checked? A poor latch can cause all these symptoms so it's worth looking into.

How are her nappies?

Have a read of this on Kellymom. It gives some reason on why she might be gassy.

There's an Infant Feeding Section on MN which you might find helpful too Smile

Thank you! Sounds like it may just be gas. She's breastfed and nappies are good - lots of dirty and wet nappies every day, at least 5 dirty ones.

I'll have a look at the Kellymom link.

My baby is exactly the same! She is also 4 weeks. I was wondering about silent reflux too. Good to know I'm not the only one!
