Need to widen my repertoire of songs/rhymes with hand gestures/tickling etc. -- 9-month-old DS can't get enough!!

And while we're on the subject, why can I never get the hand gestures for incy wincy right???

To market to market to buy a fat pig [slowly bounce baby on your knee]
Home again, home again, jiggety jig [bounce much faster]

Same for fat hog, and jiggety jog; black hen, diggety den

Catbert · 28/10/2004 13:58

Oh alright then here goes...

All time fave:
Twinkle twinkle little star how I wonder what you are (fingers waving like a star)
Up above the world so high (hands up high)
Liek a diamond in the sky (made a diamond with your fingers)
Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are...

Yes I know you all know that BUT:

2nd verse...

When the blazing sun has gone
when he nothing shines upon
then you make your little light
twinle twinkle all the night
twinkle twinkle little star
how I wonder what you are!

jamiesam · 28/10/2004 14:00

Aah, far too slow I see with wind the bobbin and hand gestures. wonder if gestures reflect different parts of the country. I'm oop north.

Also for rhymes

This is the way the lady rides, clip clop, clip clop, this is the way the lady rides, clip, clip clop.

Then gentleman, farmer, huntsman, old man

Bounce children on your knee for this one, getter faster and faster for each person - until the old man who sways from side to side (hobbledee, hobbleday) and then falls into the ditch.

And finally,

Rock, rock, rock your boat, over to the shore
If you see a lion, don't forget to roar

The hokey cokey is always fun and before they can walk, you can swing them around on "WHOAAA do the hokey cokey" part...

stickynote · 28/10/2004 14:03

That's the one! Thankyou jamiesam!

jamiesam · 28/10/2004 14:04

Toky
Hurrah, my life has some purpose today! (Children variously refusing to eat breakfast and lunch, and then weeing and pooing everywhere but in the potty or nappy)

Also, alternative for twinkle twinkle

Twinkle twinkle, chocolate bar
Drivers got a rusty car
Start the engine, pull the choke
Off we go in a puff of smoke
Twinkle twinkle, chocolate bar
how I wonder what you are

(Best translation I can get out of my 3yr old ds - they must sing it at nursery and I can't bring myself to ask staff for the words)

jamiesam · 28/10/2004 14:05

Blimey, I'm on a roll today. This has clearly been my forte. SAD SAD SAD. Better go back to my other forte soon. (very very slow housework - anyone want to start a housework enthusiasm thread)

clary · 28/10/2004 14:20

My favourite bit of wind bobbin is an extra last line:
See how quiet you can be
(finger to lips)

DD and I for some reason ruin the peace at toddler group by each yelling "it's you" and pointing at each other. Well, she started it I think.
Also
Three fat sausages sizzling in the pan (x3)
All of a sudden one went bang! (clap hands together)

And my DD used to love
five little men in a flying saucer (5 fingers up)
flew round the world one day (go round with your hand)
They looked left and right (suit the actions to words)
but they didn't like the sight (shake head)
so one man flew away - woosh (one flies off)
four little men etc etc

Also DD loves miss polly had a dolly but perhaps 9mo is a bit young for that? lots of action with that if you want em.

colditzmum · 28/10/2004 15:01

five little freckled frogs
sat on a speckled log
eating some most delicious grubs (yum, yum!)
One jumped into the pool
wgere it was nice and cool
then there were four green freckled frogs (glub, glub!)

four, three, two, one etc

eidsvold · 29/10/2004 06:21

I also do

Hickory dickory dock,
the mouse ran up the clock ( run fingers up dd's arm)
the clock struck one (do a silly booooooiiinnnggg sound and shake my head like I am in the clock and tickle her under the chin)

the mouse ran down ( run fingers down her arm)
hickory dickory dock

What about old mcdonald - dd has always loved the animal noises...

If you're happy and you know it - clap your hands - I then just change the happy to smelly, silly whatever - get her to do the clapping part - or say clap your feet - clap them together.

another one

hot peas and barley - o
barley-o barley-o
hot peas and barley-o
sugar and cakes and candy ( roll her hands over and over)

this is the way dd stands ( put her hands on her hips)
this is the way dd claps her hands ( clap her hands)
this is the way dd stomps her feet ( stomp her feet)
and this is the way she dances ( move her from side to side) she now does the actions herself.

marthamoo · 29/10/2004 07:37

The rest of horsey horsey:

We're not in a hurry
We're not in a flurry
And we don't have a very heavy load so....

Horsey horsey (repeat chorus as already written down by bundle)

That's one of ds2's faves - I have to cross my legs, stick one out and he sits on my shin, I hold his hands and bounce him up and down. It's a bl**dy killer!

And another horsey one is:

This is the way the lady rides
Trot trot trot trot
[bounce child in fairly sedate manner]
This is the way the gentleman rides
Clippety clippety clippety clippety
[bounce child a little faster]
this is the way the little boy (or little girl!) rides
gallop-a-gallop-a-gallop-a-gallop
[bounce child up and down as hard as you dare - much giggling ensues!]

marthamoo · 29/10/2004 07:37

I have a book from ELC with rhymes and directions for actions in it. Hang on, I'll go and see what it's called.

marthamoo · 29/10/2004 07:39

It's called "Five Little Ducks and Other Action Rhymes" by Zita Newcombe. It's quite old though - I don't know if they still do it.

marthamoo · 29/10/2004 07:41

Ahh progress - they only seem to have it on a DVD/video now!

here

handbagaddiction · 29/10/2004 08:24

Great one for actions and singing that my dd loves is...

head, shoulders, knees and toes
knees and toes
knees and toes
head shoulders, knees and toes
knees and toes
and....
eyes and ears and mouth and nose...
head, shoulders, knees and toes
knees and toes

...all with appropriate pointing actions of course!!

Grand Old Duke of York....on the words Up hold him high and on the words down lower him.

The second verse to Horsey Horsey is:

Horsey Horsey on your way
We've got to journey many a day
Let you tail go swish and the wheels go round
Giddy up we're homeward bound.

Doddle · 29/10/2004 10:08

There was a little mouse
and he lived just there, (tickle insole)
When any body touched him, (tickle insole again)
He ran and he ran and he ran and he ran, (tickle all the way up the legs and the torso)
Right up there! (tickle neck)

My ds2 loved that and expanded it into wriggly worms, creeping snails etc.

vivie · 29/10/2004 20:50

(hold child on lap and move either arms or legs round like pedals iyswim)

'I had a little bicycle, I bought it from a shop.
And when I see the big red light I know I have to stop.' (pause dramatically)
'I had a little bicycle, I ride it to and fro' (then speed up) 'and when I see the big green light I know I have to GO GO GO!!!!!'

Ds loves this. A good book is 'This little puffin' compiled by Elizabeth Matterson.

Gingerbear · 29/10/2004 21:23

Thanks to Wedgiesmum, I now know the words to the alternative Twinkle twinkle.....

Twinkle Twinkle Chocolate bar
Mummy (or daddy or whoever) drives a rusty car
Turn the key and pull the choke
Off we go in a puff of smoke
twinkle twinkle chocolate bar
Mummy drives a rusty car.

DD's favourite song.

Oh and 'Wind the Bobbin up' Has morphed into 'Wind my mummy up' in this house!!

monkeygirl · 29/10/2004 21:35

Five little ducks went swimming one day
Over the pond and far away
Mother duck said quack quack quack quack
And only four little ducks came back

etc etc

There were ten in the bed and the little one said 'roll over, roll over, so they all rolled over and one fell out...etc etc

Half a pound of tuppenny rice
Half a pound of treacle
That's the way the money goes
POP goes the weasel

Up and down the City Road
In and out the Eagle
That's the way the money goes
POP goes the weasel

A penny for a ball of thread
Another for a needle
Take a stick and knock him off
POP goes the weasel
etc etc

I'll shut up now....

Gingerbear · 29/10/2004 21:45

5 little sandcastles sitting on a beach
Watching the boats go by
5 little sandcastles sitting on a beach
Watching the seagulls fly
5 little saandcastles sitting on a beach
Watching the clouds so high
When along came a wave
and washed one away
and this is what the other onnes said

Now we are 4 little sandcastles.......

(last line When along came a wave and washed it away and now there is nothing to say.)

Miaou · 29/10/2004 22:11

ANother finger rhyme....

(hold child's arm up and creep fingers up it whilst saying)
Up the tall white candlestick
Crept little mousie brown
Right up to the top
But he couldn't get down
So he shouted to his Grandma
(squeaky voice)
"Grandma! Grandma!"
But Grandma was in town
So he curled himself into a little ball
(curl up your hand on the top of his)
and rolled himself down
("roll" your hand down his arm)
