Outgrown bouncer?

My 8 month old sits up straight in his chicco bouncer, and hands over the side to touch the floor. So I'm thinking he's too big for it now, not safe to leave him, (I thought that it would last longer than that?) but he can't sit unsupported yet. He has a jumperoo for limited play, and his high chair for meals that gets put away as not enough room in our flat. What else can I put him in of I need to do something? Thanks guys

They outgrow bouncers around 6 months, once they can lean and tip basically.

Apart from something like a travel cot I don’t think you can contain them anymore. My 9 month old is walking and I just have to watch him 24/7, or close gates and doors

If baby isn’t moving yet, then a rug on the floor is probably safest way.

We had a playpen for downstairs - open plan living space that was too hard to baby proof so the playpen meant I had some where safe to put him to answer the door/cook dinner.

We have a fisher price sit up and play chair that I use when I’m in the shower and a baby Walker for the kitchen although he’s only in that for short period of time. Bouncers are normally only up to 6 months.

We had a Fisher price infant to toddler rocker that lasted til 18 months

I don’t think any of mine used a bouncer after 5 months. They just went on a blanket on the floor with some toys. Once crawling, just made the room safe and shut the door so they wouldn’t escape somewhere I couldn’t see them.

Like pp we have a play pen downstairs (open plan house as well), it's large enough for both children to play in but is secure so I can pop upstairs quickly or make dinner safely

We do actually have the babybjorn bouncer that says it’s suitable up to 2 years. But I think that’s just that it’s safe to sit in without being strapped in as a chair basically as it won’t tip. Ds just climbs up and out the strap now if we try

We had a baby rubber ring thing which keeps them contained (sort of...!)

Thanks guys. Yes I feel bad, I checked and it was up to 6 months. I was confused because it can be used again at 12 months once they are can walk, and I got mixed up. Luckily he never tipped out or id never forgive myself.

We have a playpen. We have to sit in it with him and play, if we lay him in it alone he just cries. He's very clingy. He is okay if he's in jumperoo but I don't put him in that for too long.

Oh dear, how will I cook, eat or clean?

The cook and clean just doesn’t happen that much!

I tend to prep food when ds naps, so the actual cooking is speedy and can do when dh is home

Mine used it longer than 6 months because she was small, you know when it looks dangerous. I'd move on to a playpen with cushions now.

It really doesn't matter if they're a bit grumpy while you put them down for a few minutes to eat your lunch / cook the dinner / have a wee etc.
Get the bulk of your jobs done when baby is napping or asleep. Do you have a partner who can help? Either by cooking tea or taking care of the baby so you can. When you cook meals that can be frozen (Bolognese, cottage pie, curry etc) make twice as much and then next time you eat that meal, you have one ready to bung in the oven or microwave.
Once he can sit unaided, he'll probably be happy to play with some toys on the floor for 5-10 mins at a time. Same with the highchair. Mine were always happy sat in the highchair in the kitchen banging a wooden spoon whilst I cooked.

I'm afraid I also have a major issue with naps - he wakes up if I put him down so I hold him ...oh god I know I'm crap, I do plan on getting that sorted it's just a bit daunting to start.

The only time I get to eat breakfast, lunch, defrost his little cubes of food etc is when he was in bouncer or jumperoo. Someone warned me once never to get used to routines because they never last long. Wise words.

Hopefully he will get more used to the play pen

Mine will only nap on walks or on me. I have essentially a small cot which I plonk him in some of the time (by way of a playpen) for short periods and then at other times I'll pop him in his highchair to hang out with me (eg while I cook). I either hand him something to play with or something to eat while he's there. And for short tasks I just leave him on the living room floor doing his thing, and shut the door.

Don’t feel bad about the contact naps, it’s pretty unlikely you’ll look back in years to come and wish you’d done more hoovering instead of cuddling your baby!

I pop my little one in the jumperoo or cot if I need to leave the room briefly to get something or pop to the loo but if I need to cook dinner or do something more involved I put her in the carrier on my back and chat to her about what I’m doing which keeps her happy much longer than she would be playing on the floor.

I use the baby Bjorn bouncer and it definitely lasts longer than 6 months, think I used it until my toddler was about 9/10 months old and I’m using it again now with my 6 month old.

Just checked and the age range is apparently up to 2 on the Baby Bjorn (can’t imagine a 2 year old sitting in it though . Maybe worth a try?

Thank you both. I think you're right about missing the cuddles, our LO are only this small for such a short time.

Today went okay, I used the play pen, jumperoo and carried him around alot!

I think it will be easier once he can sit up without falling, and doesn't need me to sit behind him keeping him up right, he should be happier playing while I get stuff done.

I was on my own from 6 weeks.
Sometimes she was a bit grumpy but tough shit I'm afraid, things have to get done.
