BOOM WHIZZ! 1 year old and fireworks displays. Is it ok?

Is is totally insane of us to take our almost 1 year DS to the fireworks next week ? I was thinking that we would make sure he has a big dinner before we go and we'll carry him so he's snuggled up and cosy.

Is it bound to end in tears? Obviously we would come straight home if he hated it.

What about his ears, would he need baby ear defenders?

Take him along as long as you're fine to come home if he doesn't like it.

Can't see a problem wtih it.

We took our then one year old last year. Wrapped him up very warm and put a hat with flaps on it on his head. He loved it, had the time of his life.

i'm going to risk taking my 13 month old

i think my now 4.5 year old would have hated it at that age, in fact it's a big risk taking him as he's a total woose, but i think we're going to go for it!

now just need to figure out what day the display's on; i think monday, my brother thinks saturday and it's one of these local bits of information that everyone knows about but you never see advertised!

Do protect his ears. My sister took her boys aged 1 and 3 to a bonfire night. The 1 year old hated it and remained distressed at loud bangs until he was about 10. So they didn't go to any firework displays for years. I'm sure that's an extreme case, but wrap his ears up well just to be sure!

We took our son to a display last year when he was almost 2 and he hated the noise. Get some of those baby headphones.

Thanks for the posts . Now i'm off to search for baby ear defenders. If anyone knows where to get them please let me know!

We don't live in a big town so haven't got a limitless choice of shops. I sense a Google search coming along................ will report back later.

Don't laugh, but I stuffed DDs hat with flaps with bubble wrap when we went to an event with fireworks earlier in the year and it worked.

anightmareonMegletstreet · 31/10/2007 20:50

I afraid I did laugh .

I've just ordered some kids ear defenders off e-bay, if they don't turn up monday I'll get the bubble wrap out! DS has ear flaps so it might just work .

Ds was 1.2 last year, and he loved it. However, when visiting Thomas and Percy steam trains a week ago he cried at the noise they made when they pulled the whistle - it was really loud!

So I may just have to take some bubble wrap with me!

I'm so glad I saw this thread! On the street where we love all the neighbours get together and have a little display in the street - a few rockets, catherine wheels etc. I was stressing about whether ds would be upset by it (he's 13 months) but I think I'll start by letting him watch out the window, then wrap him him and carry him outside bit by bit to see how he goes.

meglet · 02/11/2007 20:02

I let DS watch a nearby display out of his window just now. He looked baffled but didn't freak out so maybe he will be ok.

The ear defenders haven't turned up yet. I hope they are here for monday.
