Moving from formula to cows milk

Hi,

Looking for some advice please!

My DS is 1 next week and I've been researching like crazy over when to move him from formula to cows milk. At present he has a bottle when he wakes (7oz/200ml) and 6oz (170ml) just before bed. I'm looking to start this week weaning him to cows milk in the morning but I have no idea how much to do and when. Should I stick with the same amount at the same time or try and drop the feed and give him some milk with breakfast?
Evening I'm planning on giving him cows milk next week and a similar amount before teeth brushing.

My second question (sorry!) is what's best to serve the milk in? He currently has bottles but I'm keen to get rid of these fast as he's becoming attached! We currently use the tommee tippee beaker for water but wondering if a larger one of these would be best? Alternatively a doidy cup or just an open cup?!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you!!

Interested to see some replies to this.. I’m in the same boat very soon and feel like I don’t know what I’m doing!

We just tried DD with a small amount of cows milk in a bottle one night and made the switch the next am. Same with DS.
In terms of bottles we’ve not bothered swapping. We never did with DS either, eventually the bottles are just phased out as they drop having milk.

Mine turns 1 next month and I’m thinking the same. The NHS website says at least 350ml per day but that can include other dairy such as yogurt etc.

Mine has dropped bottles himself and most days it’s a struggle to get him to take more than 10oz. He has a Doidy cup thing and a Miracle 360, so I’m going to try those and get rid of the bottles.

Just an update! I bought the doidy cup and now give DS all milk from this cup so he recognises it as 'milk cup'.

We dropped his morning bottle feed yesterday and you'd never know! I offer milk with his breakfast and he takes some but still getting used to it. At night he's probably taking 2-3oz but it hasn't affected his sleep and we've not had any tantrums yet but it is only day 2!!

He's still having formula milk in the evening but definitely doesn't want it as much as when it was in his bottle.

Thank you for your advice so far, I'll let you know if anything changes!

Thank you for the update, it’s good to hear how you’re getting on. Glad it’s gone well for you! Have you found his water intake has increased to make up for less milk? I’m overthinking as usual but it’s bothering me that mine won’t drink enough 😬

I felt a bit like you did OP - DH said ‘just swap it’, and as we’d just run out of formula that’s what we did. Easy peasy and it was absolutely fine. We didn’t swap bottles until a few months later. No need to overcomplicate it. And no need to continue spending money on formula once you run out.

EmilyM13 · 07/02/2021 16:36

I've found that his water intake has increased during the day as I've been so mindful that he's not having his usual. I did think that DS would kick off about his morning bottle but he hasn't batted an eyelid. I used to give him his bottle first thing in the morning but now we come downstairs and have breakfast and I give him milk with it.

The evening is still a bit of a trial, he has about half his normal but we're moving to cows milk tonight so fingers crossed!

I am a huge over-thinker too, I was so worried about this but fortunately he's been ok so far!

Hello, just coming back to see how it’s going? I’m starting to wean off formula this week. Silly question, do you warm the cows milk?!

EmilyM13 · 13/02/2021 16:26

It's going well! DS has dropped morning bottle completely - he isn't interested in milk but wants water. His evening one is going down well! At first I didn't warm the milk but in hindsight I should've as his formula was slightly heated from the prep machine. I heat it now and it definitely goes down better!

Let me know how it goes, sending all the good vibes!
