Can a 7 yo be a night owl??

DD7 goes to bed at 7:45pm however, she's rarely asleep before 9pm. She stays in her room and isn't up playing or anything she says she lies in bed and thinks about stories she likes until she goes to sleep. She wakes up naturally about 8am and doesn't seem tired, but I can't understand why she's awake so late. Should I be concerned about this or is she just a natural night owl?

Mine is similar. 11hrs of sleep is plenty at this age.

Mine was the same. Except she would still be awake even later at that age! Totally chilled, quiet and happy, just awake. Didn't seem to do her any harm at all. She's still a night owl at 30!

I wish that my 7yo got that much sleep! He recently turned 8 in fact and still only needs 9hrs. Drives me slightly nuts! Be grateful they get so much sleep.

You can't force them to sleep! Both of mine were awake until 9pm tonight (7 and 5) despite being up at 7am this morning.

I think with lockdown and not being as busy, they're just not as physically exhausted as they would be after a day at school. On a school day they're usually asleep by 8pm.

I was an owl from day one. So was DD. She slept midnight till noon. At 5 she was awake till at least 9pm every night and now at 10 she’s up till about 9:45pm on school days. She wakes around 7:45am for school but wound naturally go to bed around 10:30pm and wake at 8:30/9am. She didn’t get up till 10am today.

Doesn’t matter how tired I am, I’m never asleep before 1am.

Mine has been the same since she was very young. She'll conk out at 10, wake up at 9. Its a bugger when she is actually at school as she has to be in breakfast club by 7.30 Grin. I usually still have to dress her and I stuff her with biscuits on the journey.

On the plus side she is a good sleeper. On the minus side DH is asleep by 9.30 and leaves for work at 6am. I am not a morning person so time to ourselves Wink is difficult Sad.

Mine is. He often stays awake until 11pm (no point fighting it when there's no school) and sleep in until 9.30am. Seems to work for him. Not so much for me!!

Missingthebridegene · 21/01/2021 21:55

DSS9 just like your DD! he gets into bed at 7.45 and reads until he's tired xx

Wanderlusto · 21/01/2021 21:56

Absolutely. I was never asleep before 9 at that age.

It's fine. As long as it isnt stopping you from watching what you want on tv lol.

GhostPenguin · 21/01/2021 21:56

Ah great, thanks everyone! I'll let her get on with it then! It's just the total opposite of me, I love my bed Grin

My dc 3 has never needed anywhere near that amount of sleep.
