Scared of pooping

I know this is common problem for many parents and their kids but I just dont know what to do?

My 6 year old boy flat out refuses to poop in the potty or toilet!! I've been trying for him to get to poop in the loo since he was 3 but he is always withholding it and says he is scared. He will do it fine in nappy.

No problem whatsoever. I've tried with everything and been googling suggestions and advice but clearly none of the advice has helped his poop in the toilet fear.

When I've tried to cut a hole in the nappy he will refuse to poop in it as well. The poo that goes to poop land story doesnt make him tempted either.

He's only pooped in the potty when he has had norovirus, maybe that's where his fear comes from I dont know?

He's not constipated, but he's crying in pain because he refuses to let the poo come out. I always hear him crying my tummy hurts, the poo is coming out but he withholds it.

He gets fiber in his food and he moves alot and drinks plenty of fluids.

I just feel so sorry for him, and after a week of holding it in I just give in because I dont want him to be constipated ( I have bad memories of my own childhood of not pooping on holiday for 10 days and I was so constipated I never thought I would be able too poo)and he does it in his nappy.

I keep telling him he's a big boy and he will get a big reward if he poops in the toilet. No help there I'm afraid he doesnt care.

Please help.

You'll get there I'm sure. Have you tried laying the nappy in the potty so the poo lands in it?

Can you create a safe space, this might sound ridiculous but my sons was behind the sofa for a long time then we moved the potty to the bathroom and then transitioned on to the toilet. He got his tablet , it was a small tight area and I guess he just felt secure there now he goes no issues. Maybe even create the safe space and let him use the nappy there with his potty in sight for a while before moving to potty. Lots of positive reinforcement "pooping can be really tricky , you'll get there let's not worry" and act totally unfazed when he has to go

Russell19 that I have never heard about. I will defo try, thanks .

Cantkeepsecrets Yes i make it cozy for him when in the loo. He asks for watching his tablet poo poo stories on youtube and a drink. But when its about to come out he says he gets scared and wont do it.

Yes patience is a must and I donf make a big deal about it , I just tell him that his tummy will feel better after ...but yeah he is still afraid though. Thanks for the advice
