How to heat up frozen baby food?

If I cook a simple beef bolognese or vegetable dahl for my 8 month old DS, freeze a load of portions and then defrost and heat them up for future meals, what is the safest way to do this without a microwave?

Just defrost them in the fridge overnight and then heat them in a pan until bubbling. Let them cool before serving.

Or you can heat it from frozen in the pan by adding some boiled water and gently heat until the starts to thaw and then break it apart and turn the heat up until bubbling.
