Toddler ate toilet cleaner!

Help please!
Yesterday when I was washing up I saw my 18 month old daughter playing in the hallway but then next thing I knew she was wiping the Toilet Duck Fresh Disk from the downstairs toilet over the wall, I ran in and saw she had rubbed the gel around the toilet bowl, on the walls and also in and around her mouth. Her breath smelt strong but I had no idea how much she had consumed, I think she rubbed it and put her hands in her mouth to try, realised it tasted bad and then was trying to wipe it off her hands on the walls. I was worried because a 2 year old unfortunately passed last year from eating the same product (I didnt know this at the time, I never would have got them otherwise, was just from googling after). I called 111 and they said they're low toxicity and keep an eye on her, this morning she had a runny poo that smelt a tad chemically so I called again and they called me down to hospital to examine her which they did and they did some basic tests and again said it was low toxicity and will just pass through and no ingredients are toxic, I mentioned about the fatality last year and they said it was an extreme case but do not worry, so I am home now and she is acting perfectly fine, had a solid normal smelling poo since, shes eating and drinking fine, like you would think theres nothing wrong with her but I cant stop thinking about what happened with that girl and how they thought she was okay and a week later died. Do you think I should get a second opinion?
Also I of course know not to turn my back on young children but I was just doing a bit of washing up and thought she was just playing nicely!

My ds is 12 now when he was 2 he ate some of a toilet duck gel thing. I rang 111 who called the poisons unit and then called me back to say it is low toxicity, but to keep an eye on him and get further medical assistance if I was worried. He was fine. I am assuming that you washed her mouth out with water as soon as you found her, which is what I did with my son. Also 111 said he probably hadn't eaten as much of it as I feared and it was spread over a large area.

The unfortunate little girl who died after ingesting one of these showed lots of symptoms of being unwell, but these were not put down to her having eaten one of these gel blocks. I don't know whether her parents or the hospital were unaware at the time, but it didn't come out of nowhere, they had taken her to hospital. So I think if your dd seems fine now then she will be fine. Obviously if there is anything that makes you think she isn't behaving normally then get her checked out again.

It was a long time (a decade in fact) before I bought these things again. The only reason I use them occasionally now is because living with 3 men, despite cleaning the toilet and floor on a very regular basis I always think I can smell wee (they say they can't though).

Thank you for your messages, I think because that case is so recent and actually happened in the same town as me it's just really on my mind, I saw on one of the articles the coroner blames the slow releasing nature of the chemicals as to why it was a few days later why she worsened so that's worrying me too. But yeah that case had immediate symptoms like vomiting whereas she didnt and similar to yours MoreRainbowsPlease the majority looked like it was spread around the toilet and wall. Yeah I washed her mouth out and her hands although her breath smelt like it for quite a while!

Yep my ds smelt very fragrant for a long time!

We don’t know enough about what happened to that little girl. It’s possible she ate more than 1 over several days or had other issues. But ye the toilet duck discs are low toxicity. I personally have stopped using them and have gone back to bleach because they have childproof openings

Did everything turn out okay @Rollermolejo? my little one poked one in the toilet last night and licked his finger. Must have been the tiniest amount but doesn’t stop you worrying!

This has happened to me today I turned my back for a second and my 1 year old had put his fingers through the duck toilet gel, I'm unsure if he put some in his mouth but I cud just smell it. I rang 111 they said it's non toxic and to keep an eye on him. He's been absolutely fine no vomiting or anything seems his usual self. Was you lo ok? X

Commenting 5 years later, apologies! My little one was playing in the bathroom, I noticed she was playing with the disk in the toilet bowl. I jumped over to her and took a small piece off her and out of her mouth (same piece) we went to a&e who cleared her. She’s fine in herself but I feel sick with worry.
