Commando crawling one arm

My DS started commando crawling about 10 months (she has just turned 11 months) and favours one arm, which is freaking me out! Did anyone else experience this?

She can pull to stand in her crib and on the bookcase, she can walk holding our hands but very much depends on us for balance. She also sits unassisted.

She uses both hands normally for all other activities e.g feeding. She does find crawling a challenge and would much rather roll, therefore when crawling her left hand is usually poised ready to thumb suck for comfort, I'm hoping it's this and not cerebral palsy!

My DS did this to begin with, then crawled on all fours and walked just before his 1st birthday. I’m sure your DD is absolutely fine, sounds like she is developing completely normally!

Thank you for this, it is slightly worrying as her left arm she has under her chest in a fist but she is using that to propel her forward whilst she reaches with her right

Not this precisely, but something similar. My daughter had a phase at 6 or 7 months where she seemed to be favouring one side for 3 or 4 different activities. I did ask medical advice (circumstances around her birth gave extra reason to be concerned), but ultimately she just balanced out with a bit of time.

If your little girl has no medical history putting her at increased risk and seems to use both sides equally otherwise, I think I'd just give her a bit more time. It might just be a quirk of how she's learnt to commando crawl. If after Christmas/New Year, she's still doing it, or if she starts hands-and-knees crawling or walking and seems to favour the same side with those, then I think I'd want to get her seen.

This is exactly how my 7 month old crawls. I think he just finds it the most effective way of moving.

My DS did this. He never crawled in the typical all-fours way. One armed commando crawl until he walked at about 15 months.

DS did this, it was hilarious. His first ever attempt at crawling involved kicking his leg way up into the air as he dragged himself across the floor. I found the video the other day and it still makes me chuckle.

He's 2 years 8 months old and walks perfectly fine now. It's just how they start to work out how to move. Coordinating 4 limbs is hard work!

Mine did this for a while. Just as you describe, reaching with the ‘favoured’ side then with the other almost under the tummy. Seems better now we’re onto normal crawling and cruising 🙂

My DS commando crawled, but on 2 arms. He was a late walker at 17 months and went straight from crawling to walking. No using furniture, no pulling himself up.
Later at 4 years old he started gymnastics and the teacher commented he had weak core strength. Not a big issue as it can be improved with exercise, but I've often wondered if this was the reason for the way he crawled.

WorryingFTM · 13/12/2020 21:41

Ahhh thanks everyone! Yes when cruising she uses both legs equally. She had a normal birth so shouldn't be worried. Google is the enemy sometimes! I've never seen a baby learn to crawl before so this threw me for a loop x

Babies can come up with all sorts of weird and wonderful ways of moving. My DS used to commando crawl style but kind of dragged one leg! He turned out just fine.

Does anyone have insight on an 8.5 month old doing a sort of one sided commando crawl? Any responses would be great! Thank you!
