Ridiculous reasons your toddler has had a meltdown

I’m struggling with my very strong-willed 18 month old at the moment, and need to know I’m not alone.

This week I’ve had to abort two trips to M&S to buy wrapping paper. Today’s mid-shop meltdown was because I wouldn’t let her eat a ceramic apple she saw in a window display. Last week she lay on the pavement screaming cause I wouldn’t let her run in front of a bus.

Please tell me your most ridiculous toddler tantrum reasons.

Today's was she didn't want to go to the shop with her dad so she had a tantrum about not wanting to go.

OH goes to shop solo (lucky bastard), she promptly has another tantrum on his return because she wanted to go to the shop after all.

It was literally popping to the corner shop to buy a loaf of bread.

transformandriseup · 05/12/2020 23:17

Usually because she can't climb into the fridge

YakkityYakYakYak · 05/12/2020 23:17

Because I was on the toilet and she didnt want me to do a poo. I instagrammed her tearful face. While I did a poo.

HAA! Grin

DS tantrummed because I...

Turned left at the end of the road instead of right

Didn't let him feed me HIS dinner

After requesting I sing twinkle twinkle little start he started crying because I was singing twinkle twinkle little star

He wanted to put his fingers in the toaster while there was toast in there.

And that's just in the last 24 hours Confused

MsDFye · 05/12/2020 23:22

Mine's a teenager now (so has a different type of meltdown these days) but his best toddler one was because I wouldn't let him climb a shelf-stacking ladder in Aldi to play with the wine bottles. He lay on the floor screaming until I had to abandon my shopping and carry him home

KenDodd · 05/12/2020 23:22

Because I handed her her milk in a way that displeased her.

DontCryForMeNextdoorNeighbour · 05/12/2020 23:28

Omg with my dc, far too many ridiculous reasons to mention!

My DD is 12mo. You guys are scaring me! Grin

Today’s best was because I wouldn’t let her wear her Christmas jumper that she’d just helped me get out of the washing machine, so was soaking wet. Yesterday’s was because she wanted to take her brother to school, but had insisted she didn’t want to when they set off of course.

My little one is devastated that i won't let him wear his sunhat or sandals in the rain, in winter.

My 4 year old is cross that she thinks our chimney is too small for Santa to fit down.

aidelmaidel · 06/12/2020 02:30

We have multiple tantrums a week because I can't read her mind. "What's the doggie saying, Mummy?" she'll ask, and my foolish efforts at answers ("It's saying woof!" "It's saying yap yap!" "It's saying let's go walkies!") are increasingly impatiently rejected. Eventually, in tears, she'll tell me what I was supposed to have said--"I like green and yellow lollipops" is not something I'm familiar with doggies saying so Hmm

YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree · 06/12/2020 03:15

Also recently, he broke his banana in half rendering it inedible and instead of fixing the banana I got him a new one. He wanted the same banana but unbroken

Oh god we get this one a lot too!

Tootsietootie · 06/12/2020 07:43

That I politely asked him to tidy up his room before going on his x-box (13 year old...the fun never stops Grin )

Fivebyfive2 · 06/12/2020 09:23

I have an almost 1 year old... reading these and laughing but also a bit terrified! I have a feeling mine will do epic tantrums as even now he has zero chill 😂

The other day he was eating mango and made a proper face like he didn't like it, but kept trying bits anyway. Dh took a bit away, thinking he doesn't like it so he'd try something else... Ds cried until he gave the mango back... Put it in mouth, made a face, spat out. Repeat 😕

My DS, now 5, never had a tantrum and I admit I was smuggy mcsmugface and decided I'd simply cracked this parenting lark. Then DD (2) came.

This week alone we have had;

Wanted her Christmas tree lights on but when they were on, definitely didn't want them on. But she did want them on. But not on on, just on. (yeah no idea).

She wanted to take her bike a walk so we did. Very insistent 'bike, bike, me bike'. Got her bike out the car, she pushed it a foot, rang the bell and then spent the next 20 minutes tantrumming 'no bike no bike noooo'

Same trip, came across a little fair with vintage rides. Both kids excited to go on the carousel and DS chose a bus to sit on which on course DD decided she wanted. Threw a strop until DS got off and let her sit on it (he has the patience of a saint with her), then literally as the ride was about to start decided she didn't want to go on it anymore and screamed until we took her off. Then the ride started and she stopped because she wasnt on it....poor DS had to go round on a motorbike that he didn't want to sit on in the first place.

Same parents, same upbringing yet so different tempement wise, it fascinates (and frustrates!) me.

@YakkityYakYakYak

Some of these are brilliant. Thank you - good to know I’m not alone (and that I only have another 3-4 years of this!)
Sorry to break it to you, but I'm almost 5 years on from you (she's 6) and the 'tantrums for ridiculous reasons' are continuing!

Not as often though!

Halloweiner · 07/12/2020 01:32

He really wanted his water beaker. So I gave it to him. That's it!

PeacefulInTheDeep · 07/12/2020 02:31

These are making me laugh! We've had the broken banana one, and the carry up the stairs one too. Today's little drama was because we put cheese on the cheese on toast that he asked for for lunch Hmm

hiccupgate · 07/12/2020 10:35

A pea went under his plate and he couldn't reach it.

He threw a stick in the sea.

Emiliemoo · 07/12/2020 10:39

I told her she was beautiful

"I'm not mummy, I'M NOT" tears

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/12/2020 10:40

My now 20yo had a tantrum at age 8 because she wanted to know whether Father Christmas was real.
"Because it can't be real but no one will tell me the truuuuuuuuth!!!"

whoami24601 · 07/12/2020 11:14

Oh god I've told this before but DS (now 5) has epic meltdowns. The most memorable one started when he was about 18mo. He always has a cup of warm milk at bedtime so, as usual, I put his milk in the microwave. He wanted it NOW!! By the time it came out 30 seconds later he was so incandescent with rage he couldn't calm down enough to drink the bloody thing - 'MILK MILK MILK!' Try to hand him the milk - 'Noooooo!' I had to leave it on a low shelf for him to find later. And he repeated this Every. Single. Night. For 6 looooong months!

MummaBear4321 · 07/12/2020 11:31

I have a girl who has just turned 2 and a 4 week old. The 2 year old has been throwing more tantrums as we have been home more than usual. I have been freaking thinking my daughter is so badly behaved and it must mean I am an awful parent. Looking at this thread it shows she is completely normal 🤣🤣 the latest tantrums have been because I wouldnt let her play with the toilet, she gave the dog some of her orange and he (obviously) ate it, and a kid sat in the swing that was next to her.
