Men B vaccine (bexsero)

Hi,

DC3 due to have 8 week injections next week, DC 1 and 2 never had this vaccine when they were babies, so just to ask what your experiences were in terms of any reactions to the jab that your babies had.

I know sometimes these sorts of questions can be quite emotive and I would just kindly say that this isn't an anti vax/pro vax question, its just for me to know what I can expect because my older kids never had it (they're 9 and 7 and this wasn't part of the routine vaccinations when they were babies), and I have nothing to compare anything with.

I worry I will offend anyone and I really don't want to cause upset by asking. Meningitis is truly horrific and ofcourse it goes without saying that any reaction to vaccine would not be as bad as men b itself. It isnt a question of whether baby will have it, just how it may affect him.
It's one thing to read NHS advice, but would like experiences from other parents.

They were absolutely fine. No difference at all to my previous one that didn't have the Men B.

3 doses of paracetamol are recommended after the MenB as it can cause fever so you could buy some in advance.

My little boy had a fever of around 37.5/ 38 even with Calpol overnight after the vaccine - 111 said only to worry if it hit 39 or lasted more than 48 hours, we just stripped him to his nappy, and by the morning it was fine.
It was a long night as he had a sore tummy from the rota virus vaccine so just wanted to feed all night to soothe himself but absolutely better than the alternative of him getting seriously ill.

My DD had a high temperature for a couple of days, I would suggest following the advice to give a dose of paracetamol just before vaccination and keep an eye on temperature. She was not happy having so many jags at once, but feeding her straight after and lots of cuddles sorted that out.

1 dose after the jab and then another 2 doses at 4-6hour intervals are recommended after MenB

Both mine had a temperature for a few days after. Just dosed with calpol. They do advise calpol for that jab.

My younger one had a temp for a day or so. But fine after

My older one wasnt eligible but got her done when she was older around 2 I think. Cant remember how she was think maybe just a temp.

Mine gitbdosed up on Calpol as recommended and was fine. Honestly the rotavirus one is the real bigger, there were some shocking nappies.

But neither is so bad, unless you're my boss and manage to get rotavirus off the baby 🤦🏻‍♀️

All three of mine have had it and all were fine. But none of them have had anything beyond a mild temperature from any of the vaccinations. As others have said, it’s probably worth making sure you have some calpol or nurofen in the cupboard just in case but that’s good practice anyway!

We have infant paracetamol when we got home and gave two further doses as per the leaflet we were given at the time of the jabs. She had a mild temperature and felt a bit rotten for 24-48h

We had our next set of jabs a few weeks ago, this time there was no meningitis vaccine. We didn't give the paracetamol when we got home but later that day she started to get a mild temperature like with the previous set and we ended up giving 3 doses of paracetamol and she wasnt herself for 24-48h so very much the same as with the jabs that did include the meningitis vaccine.

Slight temp & you're advised to give calpol after (or just before in some areas), the rotavirus drops make them slightly grouchy too (although dc5(3) seemed to love the taste of them, odd child). Skin to skin helped dc4 & 5 after theirs

My DD wasn't affected in the slightest, maybe slight grumpier but it's hard to tell with newborns! Meningitis is a killer, there's no way I'd risk not giving the Vax.

Dd had it privately older and had a huge red lump on her arm- was fine after week or so. Otherwise no issue.

I think it hurts more. DD2 had it at 8w and wasn't noticeably worse than usual baby jab reactions but we paid for DD1 to have it (she was 2yo) and she was quite miserable for a few days, her arm really hurt. She was outraged, she shouted at the doctor YOU HURT ME and went ballistic when we went back for the 2nd dose

One of mine was quite miserable and hot, although I think more noticeable at the 1yr booster. The other breezed through it and didn’t even need calpol.

Thanks for your sharing everyone. Was not doubting whether to give it or not - a friend if mine lost a daughter to it- was more of vaccine affects and to prepare. Thanks again

Temperature for about 24 hours after then find

My daughter slept all day afterwards, just waking up every 2-3 hours for feeds. She was quite unsettled at night and had a fever of nearly 39c as the paracetamol wore off. More or less ok within 24h, just a sore looking red leg.

My son had them at 11am slept all day and then by 9pm had a fever of 38 vomiting and explosive nappies all night till 7am the following morning.. get your sleep in! He was off for 3 days after..

Upset, unsettled and whimpering through the night with a temp up to 38.5 is what we had the first round!

We paid for DS to have it as he just missed out on the NHS. He was quite unsettled after the first one and vomited but the second two were better. And obvs better than getting men b.
