When to end swaddling and how to do it

My DD is 5 months old and has been swaddled for night time sleeps since a couple of weeks old. She sleeps through the night like this without waking. When should I stop swaddling? And how do I do it so she still sleeps through the night? I use a velcro swaddle sack, not loose swaddle blanket.

My DS is 4 months old and every day I say I'm going to attempt naps forst with no swaddle and just a sleeping bag instead, then chicken out as he sleeps better with a swaddle. He doesn't sleep through the night but only wakes for feeds. Last time I used a sleeping bag at night he thrashed around ALL NIGHT! I'll be really interested to see what others have done.

How about love to dream swaddles. You zip them in but they can move their arms about.

The velcro swaddle I have does the same thing but arms down instead. She naps without it but only if she's held. As soon as I put her down for a nap, she wakes up.
