Just found to my horror that the cupboard under the bathroom has had a leak in there and all my photos, scrapbooks, memory books etc are all wet and mouldy and stuck together. Am trying to salvage some of it but i'm in tears. i am gutted. Would i be best dryng them out before trying to seperate them do you think?

POOR YOU thats my worst night mare. dont dry them out first. I dbe inclined to separate and dry! would hate this to happen! Hope you sort it soon. Do oyu have negs?

FWIW I lost my wedding photos and all my luggage to the the bottom of the South China Sea after a ferry accident so I kind of know what it's like.

Just asked my husband who works with photos - he says you must seperate them before they dry or they'll be bonded together.
You poor thing, it sounds awful. Do you have any negs?

thankyou for all your help and advice. I have seperated some of them but some stuff has gone in the bin. ds2 baby record book is ruined. All the pages have disintegrated . At least i have some stuff left but about half is trashed. It seems like i am destined not to have any thing to keep. Got burgled twice and had camcorder tapes stolen, camera with film in it, all stuff with very memorable stuff of the boys on it. Sorry to be so miserable but i am just sooo pis**d off now

doziduck - so so sorry about all this . Can you do a big ring around all your friends and family and appeal for every photograph they've ever taken of you and your family? Whatever you get back from them, take them to Boots or Kodak and get them burned onto a CD, then decide what to do with them from there.

Also get a new baby book and copy as much of the contents of the old one that you can make out. Maybe going through it, even if it's wrecked, will jog your memory with other stuff you can include?

Really hope some good comes out of this. You could re-do the baby book with your kids, depending on their ages they might appreciate finding out about when they were teeny.

Are you insured? Contact your insurers and ask them if you are covered for using a service like this . Not sure if the firm will do "private" projects but it is well worth asking, especially if you can recoup the costs on insurance. Believe me, these specialist paper conservators can work wonders and nothing is more worthy of their talents than your unique baby record

I think i will buy some new albums. Most of the albums have pictures at the top half that are still o.k so i can transfer them to new ones.
I will buy new baby record books too and try to remember and/or copy out the stuff i had written. There are a few un damaged baby photos i can use for these.
I can cut out some of the pictures that are ruined around the edges too. Everything stinks of mould, it's gross!
I can't claim on the insurance i don't think as they took ages to pay out last time and were NOT happy as we had made so many claims in a short space of time. Not our fault though that we got our shed broke into, then the house, twice. dh reckons they are likely to refuse to insurance us again!
