Is this a sign of teething?

Hi everyone.

I am just looking for some advice and to see if anybody is experiencing the same thing.

I have a 3 month old daughter and I have thought for about 2-3 weeks now that she has started to teeth a bit.

She keeps sucking and gnawing at her hands all the time, has flushed cheeks and just generally seems more agitated. But she's recently started to keep turning her head to the left side over and over. She keeps going through little phases of turning her head to the right hand side usually when she's trying to go to sleep.

When she's up in her bouncer or swing or sitting on us, she's fine in herself, babbling away and smiling. It doesn't look like she is in pain as such when she's doing the head turning, she just looks irritated.

Is this a sign of teething? I have been looking online but can't find much about it. I know the gums/teeth are linked to the ears so I think it may be that but I am not sure?

Hello OP. Can be hard to tell whether teeth or ears! She is very young but teething definitely possible.

Does she have a temp? In my experience, ear infection will produce a temperature. The turning head to one side and agitation would also suggest ears.

Front bottom row usually first tooth. You may be able to feel it running your finger over the gum if it's on its way.

Also, ear pain usually much worse when they are lying down x

No she doesn't have a temperature and doesn't look like she's in lots of pain or anything but just looks irritated. There's no puss or anything leaking from the ear either, so I'm thinking it's teething but hard to tell. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wouldn't expect pus, that would be a severe infection and in my experience (particularly my first baby) used to get a lot of middle ear infections. Usually came with a temperature though. It does sound like teeth then.

Is she old enough for baby Nurofen? Should help her sleep if she's in pain and will reduce inflammation if there is an infection there. Nurofen can see off an ear infection on its own in a lot of cases.

I have been giving her calpol but hasn't done much for it.
