Anti reflux milk and perfect prep

Hi all,

My daughter is almost 7 weeks and i think she has silent reflux. She coughs and hiccups after feeds, arches her back, seems to have sicky burps and pulls faces and is restless at night making noises in her sleep for hours after her feeds. I’ve just bought sma anti reflux formula and used my perfect prep machine in the same way I do with normal milk. I shook it well but I’ve noticed lumps in the bottom of the bottle when I emptied the remainder out. They were really thick and gluey. I’m worried as I obviously don’t want to make her poorly :( Any advice please on using this formula and perfect prep?
Also, how do you make your bottles with this milk when out and about? (I was using the sma pre made cartons before and warming the bottle.
Thank you!

I use aptamil anti reflux and you have to make it worth cooled boiled water. The instructions say to cool kettle for 45 minutes, but not to store the cooled boiled water in the fridge! I couldn't deal with waiting 45 mins for the kettle, so I use the prep machine. I do the hot shot, followed straight away by the cool sterile water. Then put in your formula. I then swirl it rather than shake up side down at first as I find bits of formula get stuck in the teat if you shake up an down straight away. Also remember to get bigger teats. My boy is 7 weeks and we have to use size 3 teats as he couldn't get on with variflows

Thank you!
I read about people doing both shots of water first then the formula but then it says something about that meaning it’s no sterile as the hot shot kills bacteria which is why you usually put the formula in after the shot. Thank you.

Yeah that's normal for regular milk but for some reason anti reflux is different. When looking into it (according to someone who took temp checks) a kettle which has been cooled for 45 mins is 27 degrees, and so is a hot shot plus the cold sterile water.

Double check the instructions on the sma tub as like I said, I use aptamil and it says to use the cooled boiled water.

Also, let me know how your little one gets on. Mine had been on it t for a week now and it's greatly improved his reflux (he was forever spewing up after a feed, and the gaviscon prescribed by the Dr wasn't doing much any more). The formula has stop the spewing however now he never wants to sleep. To be fair, he's never been a good sleeper, so I don't know if it's because of the formula, or his sleep would've deteriorated anyway, even if I hadn't changed his formula.

Hi we used HIPP anti reflux with the perfect prep and had no issues with lumps. We gave it a really good shake after the hot shot and then put it back under for the cooled water and it was fine.

I took sterilised bottles out with me, a flask of hot water and some cooled boiled water, then just replicated the perfect prep. It sounds a faff but it’s really not, the bottle is ready to drink as soon as you’ve done it, rather than warming up, waiting to cool etc.

We also used the aptamil anti reflux with the perfect prep and did exactly the same as @Ajahd!

Just filled the bottle up with the hot shot and the cool water together, added the powder and rolled it to combine it before shaking, otherwise it went all lumpy.

We use Aptamil anti reflux with the perfect prep with no issues. Hot shot, add formula, shake 20 times, add rest of water, shake 10 times. Lumpless every time.

milkncoffee · 12/11/2020 20:32

Or you can stick with regular formula and make as usual with perfect prep and buy some cow and gate carobel to add to the bottle to thicken it that’s all that’s in anti reflux formula

We used hipp anti reflux and PP. Try putting hotshot and rest of water in first then adding formula. It's the same as adding to college boiled water x

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies! I rang SMA and they said not to use perfect prep with the anti reflux as apparently it needs to be made with a certain amount of cooked boiled water to kill a bacteria that’s in it? They said adding the hot shot and normal water together before the formula wouldn’t work. I guess maybe the temperature isn’t as warm as cooled boiled water? Doesn’t really make sense to me but don’t want to make my baby poorly. :( thank you for all your replies.

Hi all

I am using perfect prep and aptimil anti reflux, when I've made the bottle up do I need to let the bottle sit for 5 mins to thicken? Or can I give to baby straight away? Thanks xx

AMR216 · 11/04/2021 13:33

Hi all
I am using aptimil anti reflux and prefect prep. Is any of you are using Mam bottles what size teet are you using? Thanks

Emilyxxsxx · 13/04/2021 12:54

Hi I am using mam bottles, using teat size one he is only 3 weeks old. He seems happy with the teat size and drinks 4 ounces in about 25 mins. First time mum here so not sure that's normal ? Xx

I used HIPP anti reflux. I found aptimil and sma too harsh on my LO stomach. Soon it will all be second nature - you are doing a great job!

ReocBr · 13/04/2021 21:42

Hi @Mamabear04
Do you find the Hipp is working? What side effects were you having with the others? I’ve just bought the SMA one to try and a bit nervous!

Mamabear04 · 14/04/2021 08:44

@ReocBr my LO is 17mo now and has recovered from her reflux. She was mostly BF but when had formula when I left her with my Mum. She saw a consultant because of her reflux and he suggested early weaning at 4.5mo and so I started her on baby rice which I mixed with formula and after a few weeks of weaning her reflux improved greatly and then stopped. The SMA just made her instantly poo and she seemed unsettled after. I think it's a case of trial and error because every baby is different so you have to find the formula that works for your LO. I found HIPP more gentle on my LO's tummy and she seemed a bit more content after having it. You can get it in every supermarket too which I was surprised about! Hope you're doing OK. Reflux is very hard and stressful but it will pass and you are doing a great job. I also found elevating the head of the cot/moses basket helped a little (you can bug wedge pillows to go under the mattress or just prop up the legs of the cot using a book as long as its safe). We also held our LO upright for 30 mins after a feed and that helped with the vomiting but it is hard work if they are waking a lot during the night. Take it in turns if you have an OH. And also winding the baby as much as possible helps but with our LO it was never ending!
