Hearing Test - what to expect?

Can anyone tell me what to expect for a hearing test at the hospital for my 22 month old son. He is non-verbal and a bit delayed with all forms of communication. Thank you

Following, as my DS is having one soon too!

It will be what's called Visual Reinforcement Audiometry. They will have puppets or toys in boxes to each side near speakers. The audiologists will "train" him to react when he hears a sound by flashing lights in the box so he sees the toy. He'll be distracted with a toy in front of him and they will play sounds at a couple of different pitches from one side at a time and look for reactions.

Audiologists are used to getting children to do what they can and they will keep it fun! But be prepared to return for another one if they can't get all the sounds treated they want to, it can be a slow process sometimes!

They may or may not be able to tell you if they think there's some hearing loss, it depends how much they get done. I'm a teacher of the Deaf, feel free to pm if you want!

I just don't think my son will react to this! Maybe he does have hearing problems! But it's really hard to get him to react to sound.

Sorry I'm completely jumping on this thread to ask how long ago your son was referred and if you've got an official appointment yet? If you don't mind of course.

My health visitor said she'd refer my DC two months ago and we've heard nothing since.

I spoke to HV in August about development concerns for my so.

I got a call early November from audiology department - I was about to go private as I didn't think it had gone through. Appointment is next week....

So all in all about 3 months

My baby is under audiology. As said above they will try tests where they will make a variety of sounds (pitch and volume) out of his sight and look to see his response

They are very kind and patient and positive where we go

They'll do what they can and you'll speak to a consultant. If hearing loss is identified then you'll be allocated a Teacher of the Deaf who will be able to help with communication and language acquisition. You'll be fully supported to use any technology and help with signing if appropriate. I appreciate it's probably unknown territory and you may be worried, so just see what the audiologists say then take the next step.

My son has ASD markers and knowing how much he understands is very tricky. He has a myriad of behaviours that are a little unusual. I think this is a first step towards understanding how to support him.

This was us s year ago. With his hearing aid DS is a completely different boy. Still speech delayed but so much more present in demeanour

They had DS play with some toys and a speaker beeped either side. When it beeped the toy on top started dancing. It take about an hour but I was impressed how they got DS to concentrate

When they tested him at 2.5 the test was different and when they test at 3 will be different again
