Lockdown baby - only one cold?

Hello

I have an 8mo lockdown baby who has only ever had one cold. Obviously thrilled to have a healthy baby, but I read that they should get at least 8 colds in their first year of life and that this is a good thing to build their immunity... As we're not seeing anyone, it's tough to get exposure! Does anyone know if this will be a problem?

Thanks

I don't think a problem, but brace yourself for when they start any kind of childcare. My little one has had a pretty much constant cold since August.

I also have a baby in lockdown, he started childcare in Sept and has pretty much had a constant cold since then.

I dont think its an issue at all, its just delaying the inevitable a bit!

I didn't know that about the 8 colds in their first year. My 10.5 month old has just had his first cold. I have wondered about lockdown babies' immune systems though due to lack of exposure etc.

I was a SAHM so neither of my DCs went to childcare. We obviously mixed with other children but not to the same level as say nursery. I don't think either of them had 8 colds in their first year. They are now late teens and neither of them has suffered particularly with illness so I don't think it is really an issue.

DD was 6 months old and had had only one cold by the time we went into lockdown. It wasn't until she went to nursery that she caught a second one. That second cold is now 5/6 weeks old.... 😑

DTwins were born Dec, DS was out of school March. I don't think they had any colds til September and they're on their second

My daughter was born at the end of last year. No colds or illness at all until she started nursery in September. She's basically been ill ever since! So brace yourself for that, the GP said it was to be expected.

I really don't think either of mine had colds in the first year, nothing more than a minor sniffle anyway. But once they start nursery, they are pretty much constantly ill from November to May for the first couple of years.

Thanks all, this has helped me relax a bit!

My first had one cold in the first year of her life. She's a very robust little thing! My second is 1 and on about his millionth cold. I think a lot is down to individual babies. Don't stress!

My eldest DC didn't get a cold until he was around 18months maybe older, 3rd DC when he was about 2/3 months. I would say both seem to catch a similar amount of bugs now, youngest possibly a bit more. I wouldn't worry too much.

melisande99 · 09/11/2020 19:34

I remember reading about the "8 colds in the first year"! My baby had had her first cold at 6 weeks and it was the most difficult, scary week we've experienced before or since! The idea of repeating that 8 times sent chills down my spine.

She then didn't have another cold for exactly a year.

Then a cold picked up after a couple of months of nursery, which was perfectly manageable. I'd been prepared for an onslaught of nursery bugs but it's not been that bad.

lillylemons · 09/11/2020 19:38

none of mine had colds until they started nursery.

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 09/11/2020 19:42

Make the most of it. DD, now 11 months, only ever had 1 cold when she was around 3 weeks old until she started nursery in September at 9 months, she had a cold for about 6 weeks, 2 viral infections, its been non-stop really since she started!

Tibtab · 09/11/2020 19:44

My DD is 8 months and has never had a cold 😬 I do worry that she isn’t getting exposed to any bugs because of the lack of interaction with people
