Why is my baby rubbing her face?

5 month old baby has just started to rub/hit her face nonstop when it's sleep time to the point where she does it in her sleep and I have to hold her arms for half an hour or she won't settle.
What the hell is this? She doesn't do it while it's not sleep time. We have been out of swaddle 3 weeks, 2 absolutely fine and now the past week she goes ten bloody rounds with herself boxing!
Anyone been through this? Will it pass on its own or do I need to do something? It's killing me as she's up every half hour through the night hitting herself Confused

Yep. It’s a phase.

That gives me comfort even to know that it will pass even if I can't do anything!

Yep, my almost 4 month old does this when shes tired too, I've also had to hold her arms on occasion as shes just stopping herself from sleeping! Not much advice here but just letting you know you aren't alone and yep it can be bloody annoying! Grin
