Hey all,

I don't want to be slated I just wanted some advice as I'm hearing conflicting information and now I am confused. So all help is appreciated.

Breastfed babies, do they need to be burped after feeding? The nursery nurses at the hospital said breastfed babies didn't need to be burped on the other hand others have said they need to be.

Mine did too! She had reflux tho

Mine usually did although they were definitely less burpy after bf than after a bottle. I would definitely try each time though, especially in the teeny weeny days.

Lots of cultures don’t burp babied at all but yes mine did need burping.

The nurses told me that too, they need to stop because I've found it untrue. I think they need burped less as bottle fed but still need it. I burp mine after a feed, 7 times out of ten one or two burps come

I was told the same by hospital staff and at least one midwife in the early days. However, I found DS would sometimes need burping. I think I eventually worked out I could 'get away' with not having to do it for the bedtime feed or overnight feeds (unless he was obviously in discomfort - in which case we would see if burping helped), but we did burp more often after the daytime feeds.

For me it was yet another one of those things that I had absolutely no idea about to start with, went with what felt right at the time, and before I knew it we were past that phase.

I've just remembered that we sometimes gave him Infacol (easy to find in Boots or supermarkets (in the UK)). A dose just before the bedtime feed seemed to help us 'get away with' skipping the burping at night.

A lot of this stuff, you really will just work out when the time comes. You might not get it all 'right first time', but equally there will no doubt be times when you surprise yourself by how quickly and smoothly you get the hang of certain things.
