Using dummy too early?

My baby is 11 days old and last night we used a dummy as he just wasn’t settling (not distressed, just unsettled) even after feed/burping/changing etc etc. He slept like a dream.

We’re formula feeding so there’s no risk of nipple confusion, but is it still too early? I’m hoping not as it worked a treat!!

Both of mine had dummy's from a week or two old. DS1 took to it like a dream, DS2 took a couple of weeks but by 4 weeks was fine.

If it's working then it's working, don't worry about the timelines. They're all different

Mine had a dummy earlier than that and I breastfed, it was totally fine and no issues, they reduce the risk of SIDS and were a lifesaver during teething. We took it away at exactly 2 years old where we had a horrible couple of nights as she wanted it but then she was fine, she has perfect set of baby teeth too as that also can be a worry.

Both my children had dummies, my eldest was a couple of weeks old, my youngest was given hers whilst she was still in hospital. Both were EBF, both slept through the night from 12 weeks, both gave up the dummy at 12 weeks.

Dummies are fine, it's down to how you use them. My children only had them for sleeping (some people even said they thought my children didn't have them), so if my children ever put them in during the day time, I'd say "oh are you tired, do you want to go to bed?" And they'd come out again pretty sharpish. That way we had no dependency, no problems with speech or teeth (used the orthopaedic ones) and it was no hassle giving them up. It's only snobbery that makes people turn their noses up at them, so if they work for you - go for it!

Never too early in my opinion. Most benefit is had in the first 6 months so crack on. I introduced a dummy at about 2/3 months and wish I'd done it sooner. She only ever had it for sleep and still does now at 15 months. They don't leave her bedroom so she never asks for them at other times.

I used one straight away! Even though the midwife told me not to not sure why as she didn't get a say as soon as I got DD home!

My twins were given dummies in NICU immediately, but then they were on IV nutrition then tube fed so I guess they were trying to encourage sucking. They never were able to breastfeed but don’t think that’s why. Mine both gave up on dummies by the time they were feeding, they’d just spit them out. Many nights I wished they’d take one!

I was very young when first pregnant, EBF and told not to give one to dd.

Well i was in agony, she wanted to suckle constantly, i eventually switched to formula and gave her a dummy- it was magic!

In hindsight i wish I'd of continued breastfeeding and also used a dummy.
