Cradle cap - wait it out?

Anyone have any luck waiting out cradle cap rather than treating it? Tried rapeseed oil on the advice of the pharmacist (who is a bit useless imho Hmm ) but it made it SO MUCH WORSE!! Grr Angry . Now a bit reluctant to mess with it but I noticed this morning that the cradle cap seems to be escaping his hairline and marching towards his eyebrows now Confused . If you did let it resolve in its own time, roughly how long did it take? DS is 3 months old, had it for about a month I reckon ...

We just left it on my DD. The worst was gone in a few months, but it wasn't completely gone until recently, about 20 months later. She had lots of hair though, so you couldn't see it, and it didn't bother her.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/10/2020 14:38

I didnt wait it out because it was just getting worse and worse. It was in his eyebrows in the end. When you put the rapeseed oil on, did you then comb it off after a few hours?

I use baby oil (any oil does the trick tbh - you just need an oil based product to loosen the cradle cap from the head. Lots of people like coconut oil). I put it all over his head when he goes to bed, then comb it out in the morning. It all comes off. Ive done it since he was very little, but im having to do it less and less now. Each time ive done it, the cradle caps come back a bit less each time.

I recently used Hydromol for DS which worked a treat after about a week or so. Put it on before bed and then brushed it off in the morning. There's 2 very small patches left which I'm leaving for now. His wasn't too bad however.

I did the baby oil thing, combed etc. Went on for MONTHS. And it never really seemed to get any better. Then I bought one of those shampoos and it was gone after two washes. So personally, I'd treat it.

OffThePlanet · 19/10/2020 14:43

Coconut oil gets rid of cradle cap.

YawnyOwl · 19/10/2020 14:51

I put it on overnight and washed it off in the morning, then tried to lightly brush it off with a baby brush. Just made the cap go a sort of greasy grey colour Confused

Hmm, ok I may leave it for a couple days then go in with a shampoo. He has his baptism coming up and I do have a bonnet (lol) but of course he hates wearing hats so I want it sorted sooner rather than later!! Do you know which shampoo you used?

I (very carefully) used a standard comb. You need something with a bit of an edge to get it off.

Lalanbaba · 19/10/2020 15:02

I used the dentinox shampoo and was gone within the week after 6 months trying to get rid of

ShinyGreenElephant · 19/10/2020 15:04

I used coconut oil, left overnight and brushed out. Did that maybe once every 2 weeks until it stopped coming back.

fallfallfall · 19/10/2020 15:15

It can get infected underneath, it’s not something to leave alone.

TheCraicDealer · 19/10/2020 15:17

I couldn't imagine DD sitting still enough for me to comb it out- she was very much an "I vant to be alone" baby when it came to personal care. We used Dentinox, cleared it up in two washes.

DSis's DIL went to the GP about her boys' cc and was told to use Head & Shoulders. It worked apparently.

Superscientist · 19/10/2020 15:18

We did oil and gentle rubbing for a week or so and made little progress. We had our post natal checks last week and the gp said to give it a good rub and that it wouldn't hurt her. That night we gave her a bath and gave her head a good rub with a warm flannel and most of it went. We now do this once or twice a day to keep on top of it.

YawnyOwl · 19/10/2020 15:19

I thought it was just dandruff... NHS and boots both say it's harmless and usually clears up on its own

Ok, maybe I've been too gentle! I'll give this a good go (but nothing crazy). Thanks!

Use lots of oil and next morning, use a baby brush and rub rigourously in circles to lift the flakes. Can take a few tries.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 19/10/2020 15:37

We left our baby’s and it went by itself. He did have a stubborn patch which remained for quite sometime but it didn’t bother him and his hair hid it.

OnlyToWin · 19/10/2020 15:40

I used olive oil, massaged it in and combed it out. Immediately looked better and then I oiled head when in bath to keep it at bay for a few weeks after.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 19/10/2020 15:43

Dentinox worked a charm on ds- the little bit that remained after the first wash was gone after the second.

I know there’s the coconut/ olive oil remedies but honestly life is just too short.

Unicorners · 19/10/2020 15:47

I used coconut oil and literally covered her entire head with it and left it for hours, then washed with baby shampoo and gave it a firm brushing. It came out in chunks 🤢

I repeated this every week or so and then it just seemed to go away on its own. I think any oil works but I figured at least coconut smells nice!

I did this too and it really worked. I used one of those special scalp brushes by Pouty.

Oh yes, a warm flannel also worked for me.

I did read that it can scar if you're too vigorous, so be a bit careful!

CottonSock · 19/10/2020 15:58

I did dentinox shampoo and Rubbing (picking) a bit off at a time. Some hair came out so I did it gradually, but wanted it over and done with.. only returned in small patches. She has beautiful hair now age 4, but still a greasy scalp and musty smell!

Hailtomyteeth · 19/10/2020 15:59

Back in the dark ages, we used olive oil. Cradle cap itches like hell so please do treat it.

roara · 19/10/2020 16:02

Hedrin nits treatment smothers the blighters and inadvertently cleared my child's cradle cap!
