How to tell when teeth are coming through

My DD is 16 months and has about 8 teeth. I have no idea when any of them are coming in, she dribbles a fair bit anyway, but other than that, how can you tell? I see threads sometimes where people say “DD has some back teeth coming through at the moment” and wonder how on earth they know any teeth are coming, let alone which ones! DD will barely let me get a toothbrush in her mouth at all, let alone examine her back gums for signs of teeth.
Whenever DD is being cranky around other people I do sometimes airily say “oh I think she’s teething” but really, I’m only saying it to sound like I know what I’m doing! Obviously a handful of times I’ve been right and a tooth has appeared, but that by no means accounts for all the times DD has been unreasonably whiny.
Is everyone else just guessing, or am I terribly unobservant?
