8 months baby urine questions

I have 2 questions :

  1. my baby is 8 months. urine smells like ammonia. Is this normal for babies urine to smell at this age
  2. sometimes my baby pees only a few drops . Is that normal. Is he dehydrated. Can it affect his kidneys. Maybe I should give him more water (100 ml as told by our paed)

On the face of it, it sounds like dehydration. How much are you giving him to drink every day?

Doesn't sound normal at all, is he still taking milk also? Get him checked out if he's dehydrated he can get very poorly really quickly.

I have an eight month old with EXACTLY the same. I am a GP and assumed he has a uti. I managed to get a clean catch sample this morning using a urosheath and my GP just phoned to say it is absolutely clear on dipstick but they will send to the lab. Therefore unlikely to be a uti.
My baby is EBF, not great with solids yet, poor at drinking from a sucky cup but drinks plenty from the breast, plenty wet nappies, recent mild cold.
I have no idea what is causing it. I know that a hormone is secreted during teething but my understanding is that it shouldn’t change the smell of the urine.
No other ideas I am afraid. My little one seems really well in himself.
Let me know if you find anything else!

Sometimes the nappies themselves can make the urine smell stronger.

As long as they are taking plenty of milk and are being offered water alongside meals then they shouldn't be dehydrated.
