Help! Baby hungry more often!

My 3 month old has suddenly gone from feeding every 3hrs (and every 4hrs at night ) to every 2hrs during the day and 3hrs at night!

He is formula fed since breastfeeding failed. He used to take about 150-200ml per feed but is now raking around 229-140ml.

Help! Why is this happening and is there anything I can do?

How much is he taking now per bottle?
Have you tried a faster teat?
Its a very common age for a growth spurt

Scweltish · 09/10/2020 18:43

What do you mean? Besides from feeding him? If he’s hungry, he’s hungry. He’s probably ready for a growth spurt

WoodlandGirl · 09/10/2020 19:14

@dementedpixie he is taking the amount I put in the op - basically a bit less as he is drinking every 2hrs.

@Scweltish sorry, I'm not sure what you mean? He has gone from a regular feed every 3 hrs to suddenly being hungry every 2, but drinking less. I'm told by other mums, and on the 'what to expect' sites and NCT website that feeds will gradually spread out and get more in quantity. So I'm surprised the feeds are getting closer together and smaller in quantity. Hope that makes sense.

Oh sorry @dementedpixie just spotted my typo in the op. He is now taking around 120-140ml versus 150-200ml when it was every 3hrs.

Surely you will just feed on demand? Sounds perfectly normal to me, growth spurts are common.

WoodlandGirl · 09/10/2020 20:50

Yeah but @jomaIone he has only ever "demanded" feeding every 3hrs. So I'm just asking if anyone else has found this sudden change down to 2hrs at 3 months. Remember I'm bottle feeding not breastfeeding, so we've found a pattern from early on. Also all the guidance says that we should be aiming for every 3hrs and then starting to spread feeds out more.

@dementedpixie I haven't tried but we do have some. Do you think this could make a difference?

Sounds like a growth spurt to me. If your baby is hungry then feed them. Remember your baby should never finish all the milk in the bottle, if they do then you need to offer more.

Mine is doing the same right now. He was feeding anywhere between 3-4hrs but now gone to 2 hours again like he did as a newborn. He's currently going through a growth spurt/sleep regression so I'm sure it's down to this. We feed/sleep on demand. As PP have said, perfectly normal. He's 5 months but 3 corrected as he was premature so developmentally the same as yours. I wouldn't worry and just go with it. He'll likely change his habits again!
