Grumpy, angry baby

DS is six months old and has been grumpy as hell the past two weeks. He's perpetually frustrated by being a baby and, while I do feel for him, I'm sorely tempted to throw him out of a window several times a day. He shouts and whinges almost constantly, although doesn't cry too often. Any tips to either distract him to feel better or help me not go completely mental?

Hello OP

Do you know the Wonder Weeks? It suggests babies go through “leaps” in their development and at these times they are usually grumpy little buggers a bit more needy.

I’m not a WW fanatic but I have noticed both my DS have followed the pattern roughly. My DS2 has just cheered up after a particularly arsey six weeks. I checked the WW app and lo and behold, it was apparently a big “leap”.

Doesn’t stop it happening but sometimes makes you feel a bit saner knowing it will pass Smile

Teeth? Try calpol and see if that helps?

I've heard of wonder weeks but will take a proper look, thank you.

Not teeth. I keep giving him the odd dose of Calpol or baby ibuprofen in the hope it is but sadly not so we'll get to do teething soon too!

Sometimes their teeth move around under the surface of the gums as they’re getting ready to push up so it makes them super grumpy but there’s no red gums, no dribbling etc. My DD has a good 2 month lead up to two of her teeth coming through, she was bloody miserable the entire time and then they randomly popped through and she was happy as Larry, like a different baby!

Are his poos all ok? Not windy? Can he sit yet?

If in doubt, go out - take him out in the pram or to crawl around at the park, see the ducks, look at boats or trains or rivers etc?

I'm sceptical about wonder weeks, people only ever check it when their baby is being a PITA, it tells you your baby is in a leap. No one checks it when their baby is in a sweet phase.

I suspect your baby might be a bit bored, loads of ideas out there to entertain them - explore pots and pans, scarves, play in different places, etc.

He can't sit on his own yet and seems to be trying to crawl but isn't strong enough. We do go out at least once most days which he does enjoy, perhaps I'll try an extra trip out Smile I'll try some different toys/household objects and books too.

If it was teeth moving wouldn't pain relief help? His first two only bothered him for about a week but I realise they can erupt differently.
