Compulsive picking at face

My two year old had a little insect bite on his face around 4 months ago and it was almost gone and healed until he saw it in the mirror and became obsessed with touching it. He sucks his thumb and his index finger would keep picking at it.
It's been months now and he's still doing it!! The bite healed but he makes it a scab and then picks the scab every single day! So it's never healing.
I have tired cream, witch hazel and oils but nothing is working.
It seems it's become impulsive and it's seriously upsetting me that it's going to scar and never heal.
Iv had so many comments lately too "what's wrong with his face"
Im seriously out of ideas how to get him to stop!

Seems like the issue is the thumb sucking - could you get some of the nasty tasting nail polish stuff?

@Ohalrightthen he will pick at it even without the thumb in mouth 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️
