Baby carriers for heavy babies?

Hi,

I am looking for recommendations for a baby carrier.

My son is 6 months but big and heavy. I currently have a baby bjorn but it seems like his whole weight is carried by my upper back and I can barely get down the road before my lower back is in agony.

Looking for something that distributes his weight better and puts more weight on my hips?

Would appreciate any suggestions!

Thank you

Manduca would be my top pick.. Fits adults of all shapes and sizes, can cross straps on your back or not as preferred.
Do you have a local sling library? If you could get a 10 minute Zoom consultation even better as they could show you how best to put it on to distribute weight well

Ergobaby 360. My one year old is massive, 99th percentile always! now and I can carry him comfortably in it for an hourly so without taking him off. I’m fine to put him back on again after a bit of a break!

I'd recommend a Tula - but they are very similar in design to both a Manduca & Ergo - all are ergonomic carriers which distribute the weight better across your whole body & can be used for both front & back carry. Ideally you'd go to a sling library & try several out, maybe even hire a couple for a few weeks to test run them as different carriers suit different body shapes etc better. I tried 3-4 before settling on the Tula which I love (we have 3; 2 standard sized & 1 toddler sized). We've used them for both our children. Stopped carrying DD when she was about 4? Then it was only for very short trips as she's very tall. DS (2) is still in the standard size at present.

Another vote for ergobaby 360!

Something ergonomic. Ergobaby and Manduca are great choices. You can carry quite large toddlers in a decent carrier (baby bjorn isn't one of those). We have a LittleLife carrier now, but I carry my nearly 3 year old in it and I'm pretty sure our older one sometimes went in it until nearly 4.

I used a connecta/integra with 98th percentile DS until he was 15kg. Very comfortable.

Absolutely anything ergonomic and hip healthy!

The original baby bjorn carrier really does hang all their weight off your upper back, which isn't comfortable at all. You are looking for something with a good substantial waistband which will transfer baby's weight to your hips. While you're looking for features, look for something which will support your baby knee to knee, as this is much better for their hips :)

Oh, and I would also look for something which allows you to cross the straps! I have just changed to one which I can cross the straps on, and it's brilliant! Makes such a difference!

I have a Beco Gemini and carried DS in it till he was nearly 4 quite comfortably.
