Six month old has cold and isn't sleeping at all!

Any advice?

I am at a total loss at how to help her and me and DH are on the floor with exhaustion!

Any help will be greatly received

Has she had calpol? Nasal aspirator to suck some of the snot out? Time in the bathroom with the shower running really hot to creat a stem room?

Vicks vaporiser (the one you fill with water) with a menthol pad in. Put it on a couplr of hours before bed to fill the room with steam.

Saline nose spray or drops, then snot suck after a couple of mins. Nose frida sucker isthe best one I've used.

Vicks on chest and feet.

Calpol to ease any sore throat/ headache.

Vicks shouldnt be used on babies, but you can buy Snufflebabe which is the same thing really.

Calpol do an vapur plug which is great.

Benelyn do a cough medicine for 3+months which works well.

A humidifier where the baby sleeps will help loosen any sticky mucous.

Tilt the cot ever so slightly at the head end. It helps ease congestion. We put some books under the cot to tilt it a bit - tilt the actual cot, not just the mattress. Baby should still lay on a 'flat' surface, IYSWIM.

@Letsallscreamatthesistene yikes shouldn't it?! I was putting it on dd1 from about 4 months!!!

We gave her Calpol last night but we are vigilant using it as we don't want to just give it willy-nilly. I took her temperature earlier and it was 37.4 so keeping an eye on that.

We tried tilting the head of her crib but she just seems all the more uncomfortable. Nothing seems to settle her and she is so inconsolable.

Saline drops and a snot sucker. It's what we do for babies at work with blocked noses. Though wall suction is a lot more effective!

@Toddlerteaplease hey do you mind telling me what wall suction is?:)

The suction units attached to the wall in hospitals. (I'm a paediatric nurse. I do love a good suction of a snotty nose)

OP I don’t think you need to worry too much about giving her calpol - if she needs it, she needs it. She won’t get used to it and, assuming you give the correct dosage, it won’t do her any harm. You will all get more sleep - I guarantee it! My little one had a cold last week with a temp of 37.3 (but he felt HOT) and there’s no way I would have done without calpol. He was so much more comfortable after having it

Will she sleep in a sling?

ChelseaCat I'm not sure if it is helping her at all. That's the trouble. DH gave her some at around lunchtime. We have checked her temperature and it is now 37.1 so it does seem to be going down slowly. Pleased it helped your little one. It is never nice seeing them suffer.

GirlCalledJames she has never taken to a sling or baby carrier. She either sleeps on me or doesn't sleep at all but come the night time she is usually OK and sleeps well. She used to get herself to sleep but the past few weeks she hasn't been able to sleep without me getting her off.

Sling might be worth a try even if she doesn’t usually like it; being vertical often helped mine to sleep.
