How do I phase out the bribery involved in potty-training?!

My dd is doing fantastically well in potty training, have had no accidents etc for days now, therefore every time she does pee/poo in potty/toilet she gets sweets and a sticker on a chart. Trouble is, she's going to end up with Shane McGowan-esque teeth at this rate! How do I stop the bribery!!?

When it stops being 'training' and has become part of everyday-life, to the extent that she forgets going to the toilet is a 'good-girl' thing to do.

So should I start making less fuss now when she gets it right? (still at the running around like a madwoman whooping stage when she does it!) She progressed really quickly was completely in nappies only a week and a half ago, really don't want to dent her confidence etc!

Think you need to carry on with the bribery a bit longer if its only been a week

fishie · 09/10/2007 10:12

she'll forget to ask and you'll forget to offer.

I think she probably will forget about the sweet thing eventually, she peed in the toilet first thing today and didn't even ask for a sweet actually. But will maybe carry on a bit then. Irony is, it's those sweets shaped like teeth that she picked! May be the only teeth she has soon . Thanks for replying.

Tricky that one. I did buttons for ages. Should have bought shares in them.

My friend got so concerned with the amnt getting eaten, she switched to stickers.

Echo what the others say, eventually they just sort of forget. Occassionally when me 3rd one relapsed I had to re-introduce the buttons. Little Madam.
