Weaning - am I doing it right

is this normal or do I just need to man up.

Baby is 6.5 months and has been having pureed food for about a month now and fed by me. Finger food and thicker puree he just sicks back up.

I've been following the ellas kitchen guide and it says to give thicker food. So i put less milk in his weetabix and he looks like he struggles to eat it and is almost always sick. I tried him with some baby rice I got off the mil and he was sick. It looks like hes choking or Gipping and is sick. Yesterday I tried him on omelette cut in to strips and he was sick. Tried him with wholemeal toast and banana and he managed to keep that down but still looks like he is struggling to eat it. And whst he does eat is the tiniest bit ever. Is this normal for his age? He loves his pureed food and will wolf it down.

Thanks guys

Sounds like you’ve moved too fast. Try lumper purées and mashes first. Would recommend you look at sr nutrition on Instagram, loads of good advice about weaning. Think she has a blog too.

And yes normal to eat hardly anything, at that age it’s just getting used to taste and texture, milk is their main nutrition. My baby started eating more around ten months I think.

I thought it was all going to fast too. I spoke to the health visitor last week and she told me to give him finger food now else I'll miss the boat and cause more problems down the line so thanks so much for that. I feel like im throwing do much at him at once. Hes only just gone on to two small meals a day and I feel like that is jist right for him.

Honestly take the health visitors advice with a pinch of salt. My little one wasn't that interested at 6 months and pretty much hated all purées. By 7 months she was a bit better but mainly taking in finger foods like toast and banana and didn't want to be spoon fed unless it was yoghurt which she loves. Health visitor told me drop her 5 bottles down to 2! Which wld have been way below the minimum recommend amount for her age. I dropped down to 4 and there was some improvement with taking in some breakfast.

She really only starting getting better with food about 7.5 months. She's 9 months old now and we are on 3 bottles a day. She does eat 3 meals now and I'm even noticing that she needs snacks too and bigger portions. She still won't eat anything mashed or puréed but is now tolerating porridge and weetabix.

My first born was nothing like this she loved food right from the off and was eating way more than her sister but total baby food all purées etc. All babies are different and some just take a bit longer to get there with food. The gagging is normal too they need to learn to swallow it and eventually as it gets thicker to chew as well. Try not to worry about it.

Is he usually sick with milk, is it little bits of sick or a lot? We had to go on Omeperazole as her reflux got so much worse when she started solids.

My 6.5 month old is just on finger food and the amount he actually eats is probably tiny; I mainly know it’s going in from the change in his nappies! My DD was much quicker taking to food but I’m not worried about how it’s going as I can see that slowly he’s having a little bit more and taking interest in the finger food which is mainly what I want at the moment.
Maybe stick with the purée as you’ve been doing it for one meal and give finger food for the other?

Couldntthinkofausername24 · 13/09/2020 21:51

Thanks for your advice. No hes rarely sick. Spits up now and again. He does suffer from reflux and is on baby gaviscon but has improved massively over the months. Its literally just finger food he is sick after. Keeps his puree down fine x

Have you tried finger food that’s super soft? Broccoli, sweet potato and avocado are good if he will eat them, they just turn to mush so don’t take a lot of effort to eat/swallow compared to things like egg and toast.

As a PP has said, I also agree that HV advice should be taken with a pinch of salt (based on my own experience). There’s no harm done going slowly if that’s what your baby needs. We ended up going back to smooth purées because my DD really struggled with lumpy purée and finger food, and now at 9 months finger food is all she wants and she loves to feed herself.

I'm going to go back to purees for now and the odd bit of finger food here and there. It stresses me out does weaning. X

Yes stick with purées but add thicke foods like mashed avocado and mashed banana, mashed potato etc. Add milk and butter and keep it soft but explore different flavours. I don't think I moved to toast etc till more like 8 months. I blended everything to different textures and gradually introduced more complex textures.

They need to learn to chew by around 9/10months but it takes a bit of practice for them, plus my dd at no teeth till 11 months so some foods were never gonna go down! She still can't do apples at 14 months.

Mine was the same. I gave him two weeks off then started again and now he's fine
