How to tel FIL to give less sweets to my children?

I am currently staying with my parents in law.. As we are both working and they help to pick our kids from school.

We do feel very blessed that they allow us to stay with them and the help which they rendered...

However, they do interfere when we try to discipline our kids... And my FIL have been giving them several candies a day.. Once before they leave for school, everytime when the kids get upset when they have dispute (which happens all the time if both kids are at home), when they get disciplined by us, or even when the kids are quietly watching TV....

Younger one will request for 2 whenever grandpa offers candy, and request is always acceded to...

My elder boy has been coughing with lots of phlegm for months, and have went to diff doctors. One doc told us not to give him sweets, which we conveyed the msg to FIL. It only reduced for 1-2 wks and now its back to normal..

I have indirectly hinted by telling the kids not to take so many sweets in front of him.. I do understand that this is his way of doting the kids.. To me, one candy a day is acceptable.. But not more than that as sugar is also in other food and drinks which we take..

I went online to read about the negative effects of excessive sugar in children (they are 4 and 6 y).

I know that we get tell him, but he will most likely be unhappy Have anyone encountered such issue? How did you resolve it?

"Fil, the doctor said that dc should not be having sweets so you must not give them any."
But then, I'm quite blunt with my pil. I'd probably discuss other ways your fil can treat the kids, instead.
