Constipated 9 week old

Can anyone give me ideas on ways to help my son? He's 9 weeks old and is screaming when he's straining for a poo ☹️ he's breastfed but due to my milk supply being quite low I have to express all his bottles and occasionally (about 3 times a week) give him a formula bottle as I can't produce enough milk.

He is waking up from his sleep trying to poo. Has anyone had this and found a way to help? I've tried bicycle legs and tummy massage. Any ideas would be great!

The poo has to be hard to constipated. If this is the case then you need to see a GP. If not is sounds like infant dyschezia which is normal, it’s when babies try too poo and hold in their poo at the same time. After a few weeks they figure out how to poo properly.

@Lockdownseperation thanks for your reply. I've never heard of this before! I'll have a look into it. His poo isn't hard at all 🤷‍♀️

My 7 week old has been going through this too - he looks so uncomfortable for every poop and fart! It’s just a normal part of getting to know their bodily functions. You can help him release gas with bicycling etc, but otherwise just wait and soothe. Hard to watch though when he’s so distressed!

So long as his nappies are normal and he’s calm and pain free between bowel activities, just wait it out until he’s figured out how to coordinate his guts!
