Want to change my daughter's name

Hi so my daughter's name has my husband's "family name" although he doesn't use the family name himself and his surname is different from our daughter's surname. But he insisted on putting their family name in front of her's so please his dad (its his dad's surname/family name).

I want to change it and put my husband's first name as her last name but he is insisting to keep the family name which doesn't make sense since he doesnt even has it in his full name. We are going through some tough time as well so in case we separate, is it possible to go through courts or something and put my husband's first name after her first name, instead of the family name?

Why would you give her father's first name as her surname? I'm confused! Who's surname does she have now? Yours?

You are Elizabeth Rabper.
Your FIL is Trevor Smith.
Your DH is Alan Peter Butterworth..
You named your daughter Susan Smith Rabper, using FIL's family name.
But now you want to change it to Susan Alan Rabper to reflect your husband rather than his father's family name, which he himself doesn't have.
Am I right?

If you change it then for all of her life your daughter won’t just be able to use her birth certificate when getting a job, passport, married etc etc... she will also need the legal documents of change (as well as the originals). What a hassle. Poor child.

... I know that might sound petty. “She will keep the documents all together” I hear you cry... but why? A given name is just that. Call her a nick name you are happy with. Many people go by a different name.
