Shamelessly posting for traffic.

I have wondered all day whether to post this or not but ultimately it might help save one person from viewing something they shouldn't.

For every single one of you who allows your young child to use TikTok please be aware that there is a video circulating today of a man committing suicide. Yes, he did it in a live stream and the video is all over the place now. TikTok is that one social that you cannot prevent you children from seeing ANY content. If you allow them the app you allow them the content.

Get your child off the app now unless you wanted them traumatised for life after watching someone shoot their brains quite literally out.

Stupidly I thought it would make someone think again about allowing their child to use TikTok. Apparently not.

As I said earlier, my children don’t have it as they are not old enough. However, I don’t believe that those who do allow their children to have it are likely to remove it. Therefore, any possible way to make it safer should be utilised IMO.

I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said. The way you post is very hostile though, people aren’t compelled to have the same opinion as you no matter how strongly you feel about it.

oakleaffy · 07/09/2020 18:50

@milkjetmum

I agree with pp I haven't seen anything like that in all my time using it. I think it depends what you 'like' or linger on/watch in full or search for, then it shows you more of the same. Or maybe I've been lucky?
Definitely. My 'Recommended' is always stuff similar to what I have watched before. Brother likes old trains, and this was in amongst the 'recommended'.
ChickenwingChickenwing · 07/09/2020 18:51

@MoistMolly

I can parent my own children thanks Op

Oh wow. What a nasty reply.

Literally posted to warn people so their children don't see a horrific graphic video this afternoon.

So, as you 'can parent your own children' I can only assume you don't have a problem with TikTok, I mean if you agreed it was inappropriate surely you shouldn't have made quite such a cutting reply Sad

Hostile?

Whatever. I was genuinely trying to offer up a warning here if the most vile content.

ChickenwingChickenwing · 07/09/2020 18:53

Oh and if anyone doesn't have the same opinion as me about their children watching a man shoot his fucking brain out then they are the ones with the issue, not me.

My 11yr has no social media, my friend let her daughter have it but told her she wasn’t allowed to post on it. When she found out that she was posting she was livid and was less impressed because it was mature content but by then the damage is done.

ChickenwingChickenwing · 07/09/2020 18:55

Definitely.

Ok, you and the others like you who are saying this are the reason I posted this thread today. You have not seen any inappropriate content, great, but it is absolutely vital that you know it is there.

I've been using Tik Tok for a little while now and I've been so shocked by what I've seen going on on some pages - there's been a spate this week of 19/20 year olds doing things that really they should have known better than to do, but also 14 and 15 year olds doing things that just make me despair as a 50 year old mum, then there are vulnerable adults distraught at the cyber bullying that they are being subjected to and you just think "where are your carers"? Not to mention the videos of the young girl caught up in an abusive situation - and I know that the videos were shared in order to try to achieve justice for her but they are still harrowing. It's not a site I'd want my children on.

@ChickenwingChickenwing
The internet genie is well and truly out of the bottle.
It cannot be ''put back''
Kids see something hideous, it may shock them, and they post it to their friends...
My Brother was upset by the electrocution video...and showed me, maybe so he wasn't 'alone' in having seen it.

Crazily, it is still there.... all these years later.

Kids will always share horrible stuff..the more 'forbidden' the more exciting it is.

Ban while you can... but sooner of later this stuff will be accessed.

I held off having a computer of my own for years, as was afraid of nasty stuff...but this stuff has to be actively looked for ...and 'safe search' is an option now.

Agree tiktok can be shocking. I've come across videos that made me feel sick in the mouth and despite reporting them as unsuitable for minors, the decision was made to keep them up as it did not violate guidelines. Absolute BS. Honestly it should be 18+

A couple of folk were asking where the OP got her information from so just posting to confirm what she's saying. Thanks OP.

I was trying to prevent people's children from seeing a video today. Today. I know this shit is out there but in TikTok they don't even have to look. It finds them.

The amount of young children on TikTok is shocking and the fact that this stuff is available online is absolutely no excuse for allowing a child to be exposed to it.

I'm not a raving loon for goodness sake. I was trying to help. Even if one parent thinks 'oh, that doesn't sound so good, maybe see Johnny shouldn't be using that app' then that is good. I was literally trying to help. To warn people who don't know this.

Thanks. I don't know why people were asking where I got the information as if I made it up or something.

I saw the video. I have been turning it over in my mind all afternoon trying to work out whether or not to post here. I really was trying to help.

If it was videos - plural - did that not put you off the app after the first one?

None of us use it here, but I’m curious as to why anyone would keep using it after seeing unsolicited content that made them feel sick?

Also, thanks for the warning OP. Mine don’t use it and would hate to see anything like that, but now I can warn them that there’s something doing the rounds if friends are trying to show it.

Yeah but you're probably putting a few parents off of asking questions here and actually discussing it.

There's really no need at all for the attitude you've shown towards some posters on this thread.

christ OP the message is being lost with your RUDENESS!!

I did post to try and help.

Also, I haven't called anyone any names. I have simply reiterated what I was trying to do.

Young children don't need to be on TikTok and as a matter of urgency today I made this post. I want to prevent any more children being exposed to this . It's horrific.

OP posts:
yetanothernamitynamechange · 07/09/2020 19:08

The comment about teaching children to be resiliant... I agree thats an important skill to have generally. But even as a resiliant adult, I would be very bothered at seeing a video of someone committing suicide. We SHOULD be upset if we see content like that. So I don't think teaching resiliance helps when it comes to these very extreme videos. In fact, if a child reaches the stage where they arent bothered by this content because they're used to it then theres something very wrong.

Floralbean · 07/09/2020 19:09

It's not the first time that's happened on there, sadly. The problem with it is that you might be happily scrolling through some fun dance vids, and the algorithm that decides what shows on your FYP just randomly throws in something about bondage, eating disorders, mental health, or whatever else; the controls on it only work if whoever uploads it uses certain tags. There are also live streams where some with a very young audience ask for money, and make a fair amount which is gross.

Lucindainthesky · 07/09/2020 19:10

I've seen the video (on Twitter though, not tik tok) and it certainly isn't something you'd want a child to see.

As an adult I love tik tok but it's completely unsuitable for children in so many ways. One that popped up for me today was a young woman rating the various objects she'd inserted into her vagina. There are lots of drugs references on there too.

I'm not sure there is much to discuss when we are talking about a gun to the head video and young children though?

I mean really? Who defends letting kids see this? I genuinely expected everyone to agree TikTok is not the place for young children. Shocked that they haven't tbh.

You can restrict content on tiktok, its relatively easy

YeOldeBlackFog · 07/09/2020 19:11

OP you come across a little unhinged and you’re getting people’s backs up. You could get your message across without being so hysterical. A simple “are people aware that suicide videos and the like are on TikTok? Just putting it out there incase you didn’t know and your kids use it”

Not “Get your kids off TikTok!!!”
