Is this Reflux?

Hi,
I’m a first time mum to a boy and he’s 18 days old. I’ve been on antibiotics for nearly a week due to my stitches from birth getting infected. My little boy is on medication for thrush from my antibiotics but for the past few days he’s been sicking up after every feed and just seems so windy. Is this reflux or could my antibiotics be causing this? He’s actually quite a content baby usually so this is very out of character. Has anyone had this?

Windy could be the thrush. Some amount of being sick is normal as the top of the stomach is not fully formed when babies are born and as he gets older this will improve.

If he is happy just before and when he is sick and has enough wet/dirty nappies and is gaining wait then it’s generally not considered to be a concern.

How is he when he's laid on a flat surface? Does he prefer a bouncer or sling?

Gripe water and infacol both worked well for my ones wind, while you work out what is causing it.

He sometimes lies still on his back but other times he writhes and wriggles like he’s uncomfortable. Stretching his legs and arms out etc. I do have gripe water but didn’t want to use it yet as he’s only coming up to 3 weeks. I wasn’t sure if you could use it when they are that young or whether I should use it whilst he’s being treated for the thrush.

I won’t use anything else until the thrush is sorted. I think gripe water is 6 weeks.

For now I would just keep an eye on it as see what happens after the thrush treatment has stopped.

Infacol can be used from birth, if the wind is bothering him.

And if you are concerned, do speak to your GP. It's what they are there for, and it's no fun for anyone if a small baby is unhappy. And if he is unhappy and you think it could be reflux, do ask. There are options available.
