Newborn sleep routine?

I guess I should be grateful for the way things are right now, but I'm confused? My newborn (5 weeks) seems to spend her nights easily asleep, just wakes up, feeds, then right back to sleep. But during the day she's always awake, hard to get asleep for more than 10 minutes, cries if she's not by me, it's hard to get anything done! She sems to wake at 7 and her night sleeps start by 9. I watched a baby documentary that said newborns can't even have a routine at this point?

Oh gosh it is so hard isn't it!
I think it is quite true though - newborns don't really have a routine, although they can settle into a pattern a few months in. Have you got a sling or a baby wrap? You might be able to get your LO in there and then at least have your hands free for a bit?
It's such a tricky phase but I'm sure you're doing a fabulous job!

I got a sling in the baby box but I could never seem to get it on right! Maybe it was her size then, she was 5lbs. I could always find a video of somebody putting one on and see if I was doing it right

Might she be getting overtired? Mine needs to feed to sleep and then be held ten or fifteen minutes until she's deeply asleep before I can put her down.

My first did just take all naps on me, which wasn't fun but it was easier than if she didn't sleep. I used carriers so I had my hands free (for using the remote and snacking, not housework!).

I do worry thats shes getting overtired! But then she just seems to fight all the rocking and white noise (i swaddle her too). In the day the routine roughly is more of, she wakes, feed, change if she needs changed, if she seems awake play with her a little then see if she wants fed again to make her drowsy or try getting her to bed. But she seems to really fight it most times and even after the tiny naps she wont be lulled to sleep again :(

Neither of my kids would go down for naps as newborns, they had to be held all the time.

Ugh! I just don't know. I have her swaddled and im rocking her she has been up for about 45 min, yawning like crazy, but she wont sleep just keeps staring at objects in the room. Is she wanting to be awake or tired and fighting it? I'm gonna take her on a walk and rock her and hopefully that takes care of whichever it is

Similar position here at 6 weeks - she is brilliant at night, which I know is incredibly fortunate! Although in the day she has started resisting naps. She drops off in the pram, or on me, but lasts about 10 minutes on her own.

I know I should be happy with the nights, and it does make the day easier to deal with having slept well... but I can get nothing done!

newborn and sleep routine ?
Good luck!

My first did sleep well but no rout in whatsoever
The only routine aspect for my second and third was that there was no sleep

You think it’s bad now wait until they can’t be plonked anywhere and become mobile. I turned round to put something in the dishwasher and my youngest was halfway up a six foot cat tree Grin

Some babies just do not like naps, mine had 20 minute naps in the beginning all day, it will get easier as baby gets older.
