Swim nappies and what other sun stuff for holiday?

We are going to visit DD’s grandparents in France next week, they have a pool but I haven’t got her anything to wear in it. She will be 5 months when we go and first time swimming.

What does she need? Disposable vs reusable nappies? Is a wetsuit type thing best for the pool or a swimsuit and factor 50 ok? What about the ones with the inbuilt pool floats? Any other recommendations?

The full body sunsuits are great, and keep them protected. I'd also recommend a swim sun hat that has the long flap at the back of the neck.

Reusable swim nappies are great, we use the Bambino Mio ones. It depends on whether you want to be washing nappies on holiday though?

Mil will be there and hasn’t met DD yet so is desperate for any little jobs and would be more than happy to launder swim nappies!

Definatly a uv all in one swimsuit, as babies under 6 months old cant use suncream, so just cover them as much as possible and keep in the shade

A hat in one of those quick dry fabric with a bit of a brim to protect the eyes from sun .
You will have a great time. Have plenty of towel by the pool side, one to lay her down and one for wrapping her. If unheated, the pool might be quite cold for her, so keep it short.

When in the water wth her, always face her, don't hold her back against your chest as you might misjudge where her face is, and she might have part of it submerged (former lifeguard , and it takes nothing).

At 5 months , I would probably go for disposable nappies, as they poop more at that age, especially if breastfeed, and it would be pushing the love of the grandma to have her clean lots of poos. Sometimes, the reflex of cold water might make her have a bowel movement.

Maybe have both and see how you go with reusable, but I wouldn't rely only on reusable.

We have bought a ‘splash happy nappy’ with insert for 4 month old. It’s the one most swim schools recommend for containment.

All swim nappies are only to contain poo btw, none wee ( otherwise they will try and absorb the entire pool!). So one decent swim nappy should be fine as you only put on literally when in pool and change as soon as out.

The happy nappy above has an insert to allow any poop changes easier and main nappy is neoprene like a wet suit. It was about £10 off amazon. Def saves luggage space and buying lots of disposable.

Definitely an all in one factor 50 suit - you shouldn’t be putting sun cream on her at 5 months and anyway the suit is less faff and you don’t have to worry you’ve missed a bit! Most come with a matching hat in the same fabric that she should also wear in the water.

If she’s got one of those on then I’d go for a disposable swim nappy (just buy a packet) and don’t worry about also putting her in a neoprene thing on top (they’re often recommended for baby swim classes, but make the whole thing v bulky and if she does an explosive poo the suit will catch it)

Get her a couple of sun hats as well for dry - the ones with strings and back of the neck coverage are the best. And try to keep her out of the sun at the hottest times of day. Baby skin is so sensitive!

Uv wetsuit thingy will also keep her warm, young children can’t regulate their temp so get teeth -chattery quite quickly if the water is more than cool

A little towel for her. Some lotion if she gets dry skin
