Baby has hair in bum crack - worried sick

My baby (4 months old) did a poo this morning and as I was cleaning her up, I noticed that she has a few longish black hairs growing in her bum crack, kind of between her bum hole and her back. They’re not visible unless you part her bum cheeks and I’d say there are about six to eight hairs in total. At first I thought it was random hair that has got caught in her bum but it’s definitely attached to her skin.

I’m fairly certain this has happened very recently as I’ve never noticed them before - unless I missed them somehow?!

I’m so worried - what does it mean? Could it be a sign of spina bifida? Please help Sad

Ask your HV/GP.

ZOMBIE THREAD !!

Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2021 12:54

@Nickki29

I have also found a tuft of hair next to a dimple on my daughters lower back although they dimple itself is very small. What was the outcome *@soworried88*
If you click on 'See All' on one of the OP's posts they update with the outcome.

It's called Vellus hair and is not unusual.

@soworried88

I’ve now seen a pediatrician who had a really good look at my daughter’s back and thinks it’s just genetics and nothing to worry about. So relieved! Smile
@Iwonder08 is hormone imbalance something that’s easily treated?

Is there a chance that it could just be a random bit of hair with no medical reason? I really hope so.
So I work with people and children with hormone imbalances

Your question isn’t straight forward to answer sadly

It would be highly dependent on what hormone was imbalanced.

Dark hair can be a sign of lots of things. But have you noticed anything with your child? Growing ok? Weight good? Hair ok? Eye sight ok? Hearing ok?

I've just checked this thread again and am quite shocked by the number of deleted messages. I'm glad I hid the thread for a bit after my last post now! Thanks for the reassuring response *@HopeMumsnet*.

For those asking about the timeline - despite being referred to an NHS paediatrician, I ended up booking a private consultant on the Monday afternoon as I was so worried, and was seen the next day. It was really expensive but I was in bits with worry, so I just couldn't wait for the NHS (I know they're very overstretched and it can take weeks, if not months to get an appointment).

So very glad!

Good luck lovely xx

@missbipolar

That timeline is incredibly fast for the UK especially when its not lifethreatening!
Especially when it's been all over the news that medicals treatments are now 18-24 months behind schedule

@awesomeaircraft

Sympathies. Please get off the internet though, that place is a horrid place for worried mums. I think with my first one, I managed to convince myself she had terminal cancer from googling her cold symptoms. I remember being worried about my baby having some white hair too, turned out normal too.

Likely to be nothing worrying. Check with your HV or GP for peace of mind.

This advice is so true. The internet can be a great help but by christ, it can cause the worst anxiety ever!!

@soworried88

Thank you. I’ve contacted NHS 111 and a GP is calling me back within the next 12 hours. It’s just so strange how it’s suddenly appeared (unless I’ve missed it - but surely I couldn’t have done?!)

If she did had spina bifida would it not have been picked up on the scans she had in the womb, or at the six week check with the doctor? They never detected any problems with her spine. I’m so scared.

The bottom of my uncles spine (just above the crack) is coated in thick black hair and the skin is brown for several inches, its from late closing spina bifida in the womb (before ultrasounds).

He has no spinal or medical problems from it, its just classed like a birth mark would be, just a skin anomolie really.

It was also there from birth, you cant develope it after birth from sleeping funny.

I’m wondering how this all went for you and what ended up happening? Going through the same now with my daughter.
