Baby has hair in bum crack - worried sick

soworried88 · 23/08/2020 09:13

My baby (4 months old) did a poo this morning and as I was cleaning her up, I noticed that she has a few longish black hairs growing in her bum crack, kind of between her bum hole and her back. They’re not visible unless you part her bum cheeks and I’d say there are about six to eight hairs in total. At first I thought it was random hair that has got caught in her bum but it’s definitely attached to her skin.

I’m fairly certain this has happened very recently as I’ve never noticed them before - unless I missed them somehow?!

I’m so worried - what does it mean? Could it be a sign of spina bifida? Please help Sad

There was (is?) a noble family in Spain whose family name was "de la Cerda", which means literally "of the bristle". Apparently, the founder of the family had a hank of very long, coarse hair (like a pig's bristles) growing from the bottom of his spin when he was born.

So it seems to happen now and then. The vagaries of genetics, I imagine. You'll laugh about this with your child when she's older.

@CandleWick4

I’m surprised at people questioning the OP about her Drs appointments. I’ve had no issues getting appointments recently and had a couple of over the phone video appointments that were same day requested. Surely it’s just a variation on areas?
Oh absolutely it depends on area, but we can still be surprised at the speed of other areas. Especially if it’s SO much faster than we’re all used to.

It’s quite easy to get same day appointments at my GP- it’s the way they operate. You can’t book appointments in advance as such, they become available each morning for that day and you have to phone early to get one. They have less people failing to turn up this way.

If you phone later on and there are no appointments left, if it’s a child that needs to be seen, they will usually invite you after surgery hrs are finished and you just wait for the GP.

Things like Smear tests and midwife appointments are booked in advance as they’re with the nurse/midwife and more routine.

GP phone appointments at the moment are easy to get where I am.

A paediatrician appointment two days after a referral not so much.

Especially as OP was waiting for a letter with an appointment on the 24th then seen on the 26th. For a non-emergency that is practically unheard of.

My dd has a very hairy area on the top of her bum crack. It was never mentioned by health professionals. She is 14 now fit and healthy Running cycling surfing

She is a bit hairy in general and does wax her lower arms herself. I think she is just a hairy girl.

I'm sure your baby will be fine but get her looked at for your own peace of mind.

stillfeelingmad · 26/08/2020 08:04

Yes ours are mostly video but we're having no problem at the moment, I recently had a consult with a nurse in the am (phone) consult with GP the same afternoon (phone) and blood tests the following afternoon!
Ours seems to be way faster now people are calling in unless summoned

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 26/08/2020 08:05

2 GP appointments in one day would be easy enough in my area. I’m betting the paediatrician is someone the OP knows rather then an official appointment. Or else she’s a complete weirdo and walked into a private hospital demanding to be seen immediately.

NHS is actually working much faster where I am because of phone appointments due to Covid. On a totally unrelated matter I spoke to my GP in the morning, got a Zoom consultation with a specialist the same afternoon (I was amazed) and had a small op the following week. I’ve never known anything like it. That was using insurance - but the GP was NHS as usual. I think people are staying away unless they HAVE to.

Good morning op, please try not to stress about this. Let a Dr check her over but I am sure it will be absolutely nothing. I had such a fright when my second baby was about 2 weeks old, noticed one day that he had large lumps under each nipple, seemed to appear out of nowhere! Hv told me it was the hormones from me passing through him (I was bf but not sure if she meant from that or just hormones from when I was carrying him) I do think from what you've said it will be hormones.

Perfectly possible to see a paediatrician on the same day if you pay. There is a daily private Self referral paed clinic near us. I have never used the GP for my kids over and above basic ear infections etc and our paediatrician will generally see them same day especially if he can hear your are especially worried

misses the point

Can I live where you do to get seen by 2 GPs and a pediatrician in the space of 2 days! It took me a year to get my LB in front of a dietician for his dairy allergy! And it takes 3 weeks as a minimum to get a GP appointment!

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 26/08/2020 08:29

i can only assume the paediatrician was on call and the op took her dd, or at least, had a phone call.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/08/2020 08:29

@Sayitagainwhydontyou

Please don't take medical advice from randoms on the internet. If you're concerned, call your HV or GP, pop in to the pharmacy and talk to them, or call 111.
THIS!

My DD had (and still has, a distinct patch pf hair at the base of her spine. She is otherwise physically normal and healthy.

Sometimes it it just a patch of hair.

Doihavetogotoworkdotcom1 · 26/08/2020 08:29

So lucky to get seen so fast.

Just seen your post after I had posted *madness

SNAP!

My DD is also a hairy girl (well - woman - she's 33), as am I. It's just the way we are and nothing wrong with that.
