Baby has hair in bum crack - worried sick

My baby (4 months old) did a poo this morning and as I was cleaning her up, I noticed that she has a few longish black hairs growing in her bum crack, kind of between her bum hole and her back. They’re not visible unless you part her bum cheeks and I’d say there are about six to eight hairs in total. At first I thought it was random hair that has got caught in her bum but it’s definitely attached to her skin.

I’m fairly certain this has happened very recently as I’ve never noticed them before - unless I missed them somehow?!

I’m so worried - what does it mean? Could it be a sign of spina bifida? Please help Sad

I’ve now seen a pediatrician who had a really good look at my daughter’s back and thinks it’s just genetics and nothing to worry about. So relieved! Smile

@CleanandJerk

Hi Solo. If this is any reassurance to you, I noticed during my second baby's early months that she seemed to have patches of hair along her back. When she went for a six week check my gp mentioned that she thought she had a Mongolian Blue Spot but as she is mixed race, didn't think too much of it. Both my children were born early and had laguno (excuse spelling but soft downy body hair) so I thought it was just that but more pronounced. I didn't think too much of it. It never came up in any medical intervention etc. That baby is now 9 and still has hair on her upper back, but the hair lower down faded away over the years. She is completely healthy. I can't sleep tonight and I had forgotten all about this until I saw your post. I hope that reassures you. Ring your GP tomorrow and have a chat with them when you get your appointment. Try not to worry.
My daughter had a very hairy back as a baby, mixed race here too. She's nearly 11, no sign now. My son also had some grey hair as a baby. Scared me silly. Sometimes this stuff is random but you have to see GP when worried. Good luck op

So you saw two different GP’s in one day and a paediatrician the day after?

Angelina1972 · 26/08/2020 05:12

2 of my 3 children have sacral dimples. Not noticed at any checks. When I hit my head together I went to the GP about my son (eldest dc). GP referred to a neurosurgeon. Son had MRI and everything was fine. Told neurosurgeon about youngest dd so she was referred as well, again her sacral dimples were checked with full spinal MRI and everything was fine.

Deffo get to GP and ask for referral to a neurosurgeon. That’s my advice.

How can you not have realised its from inheriting hairy genes? Do neither you nor your babys dad have hairy backs?

I had similar thoughts!

That timeline is incredibly fast for the UK especially when its not lifethreatening!

Whenwillthisbeover · 26/08/2020 06:06

Even with private health care.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 26/08/2020 06:16

Wow that was amazing service! Glad it's all ok.

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/08/2020 06:28

My husband has spina bifida occulta, you would never know, he was a professional actor/dancer for years and has amazing posture. I think it’s quite common and lots of people have it and don’t know so if it is that, it’s not the end of the world.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 26/08/2020 06:29

how fabulous, glad to hear you are reassured.

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/08/2020 06:31

Ah just seen your update, that’s good news, particularly if you or your DH are quite hairy.

FlySheMust · 26/08/2020 06:36

What a relief, OP.

Aridane · 26/08/2020 06:55

My nephew was a hairy little creature - thick dark hair down his back

speakout · 26/08/2020 07:08

Amazingly fast health care.

Here in the UK referrrals are often done by letter- so even an urgent referral would take at least a week.

What country are you in OP- top class health care!

HoppingPavlova · 26/08/2020 07:13

It might be spina bifida occulta, which is symptomless, and occurs in 10-15% of people, most of which only discover it if they have an X ray for something else.

Absolutely, you have no idea how common this is - well 10-15% of people obviouslyGrin. You don’t even bother mentioning it to patients generally, not because there is anything to hide but it’s just completely irrelevant and would never have been turned up if not via investigation for something completely unrelated.

FortunesFave · 26/08/2020 07:15

Aw that's great OP. I well remember the anxiety of babies...my second DD had a slight heart murmur and I was SO worried. When it came out as gone during her scan I was SO happy. I practically ran out of the examination room with her.

madcatladyforever · 26/08/2020 07:18

My sister had it and it just fell out when she was around a year old. She has an incredibly tiny spina bifida malformation which has never bothered her and she is 40 with two kids now, plays sports and has no mobility problems.

Bluesheep8 · 26/08/2020 07:19

I wondered about this too. Whereabouts are you op? That's almost unheard of surely

Bluesheep8 · 26/08/2020 07:20

Glad to hear it's nothing though, just amazed at the healthcare service

JacobReesMogadishu · 26/08/2020 07:24

I’m surprised the GP said it couldn’t be SB as it would have been picked up on scan.

Dd has spina bifida occulta and it wasn’t picked up on scan or even at any of her checks when she was born. A doctor friend told me when she was about 4 months old. Then we realised I had it as well!

That was quick?!
It took me over a week to see a private consultant paediatrician and that was because we got a cancellation

CandleWick4 · 26/08/2020 07:38

I’m surprised at people questioning the OP about her Drs appointments. I’ve had no issues getting appointments recently and had a couple of over the phone video appointments that were same day requested. Surely it’s just a variation on areas?
