Newborns feeding/sleep

Just after a bit of reassurance and or advice. My son (2nd) is 6 days old, he is slightly jaundiced although that's going now. He lost 4.9% of his birth weight by day 5 which I was told was really good, and he is producing lots of wet and dirty nappies.

However! He basically sleeps all day. Apart from feeding every 2-3 hours, he isn't really awake much. Maybe 15 minutes or so here or there and that's it. I'm sure this is normal but my first son was the opposit so just looking for confirmation?

Also, evenings he tends to just switch personalities and he is wanting to basically feed allll evening/night. He will be rooting and headbutting (which is signs of wanting to nurse isn't it?) so I'll latxh him on, he'll feed but be asleep on me withing 5 or 10 minutes.. But he does carry on sucking with his eyes shut. This will just go on all night. He'll come off, ill wind him which he is pretty good at bringing up, then he starts fussing or crying and rooting again.

I know this can be common so basically just wanted to hear some stories of those that have had this and when it gets easier?

I had this and it got easier at around 6 weeks.

Yep sounds pretty normal. It’s very hard work. But normal. They feed more at night because back in the day when humans were wild, it was safer and also the mothers were busy foraging etc in the day.

I just made sure I offered a feed every 3 hours in the day. Regardless of whether it was ‘asked‘ for or not, and at night let it go to 4 hours, gradually letting them sleep until they woke at night after about 6 weeks.

Good luck and congratulations x

Completely normal! Newborns can sleep for 18 hours or more out of 24. My DS, now 6 months, was exactly as you described. I used to wish we was awake for longer and now I wish he would sleep more haha. Sounds like he's cluster feeding in the evening to increase supply too - all that suckling, awake or not, is doing a job.
It will all even out eventually!!! Is this first time BFing? Once your supply is established, feeds will take on a more regular pattern as will naps. Xxx

I have a 10 day old and he is exactly the same. Whenever my parents pop round during the day they say he is such an angel as always happy and asleep but he is up most of the night feeding even though he falls asleep half the time when feeding then wakes up when I put him to bed 😴

Pretty normal. It took to week 8 for my second to get the difference between day and night. For now feed as often as you can during the day and get him in some sunlight.
