Burping techniques

Hello! Random one, my husband sits our 8 week down on his lap and slaps his back to get him to burp.

First time family visiting and they all said you couldn’t do that. Should just gently rub his back... thoughts? I don’t think the back slapping hurts him but does look a bit violent.

So it depends how hard the slap is. I do 20 gentle slaps, 20 rubs and repeat. It’s actually what most people I know do. A hard slap, no.

I tap their back for long as needed with a few rubs thrown in, I didn’t find rubbing effective without tapping too. Either way as long as it isn’t a hard tap then both are fine. - strange they said that as I thought most people did it that way, that’s what the midwives told me to do.

Not a hard slap, but taps with him over my shoulder. Maybe some rubs. Basically I keep going for as long as I need too. When my son was very little I used to sit him on my lap to do it, but he's a 19 week 98th centile lump and my arms ache loads doing it that way now 😂

Me and DH always put DD over our shoulder, rub and pat, but my MIL puts her on her knee. Don't see the difference tbh! Each to their own and what they're comfortable with

We do pats on the back or the icecream cone technique where you sit them on your knee and gently gyrate them like you'd do filling a cone with icecream 🍦 works well.

I used to do pats, rubs and jiggles, but what was also helpful was sitting the baby down and then bending them forward from the waist slowly and the straightening them up again slowly.

I would say that if people are surprised by how hard he’s doing, perhaps he wants to be a bit gentler. With all three of ours I had to have it pointed out to me that I was rubbing too far up. Blush
