Rules around TV

I have a 5 year old and 2 year old. They would both happily watch TV all day.

It's a beautiful sunny day. We've done some lego and reading books this morning. I suggested we go out in the garden. The 2.5 year old wanted the paddling pool out. As I'm about to head out of the door the 5 year old asked if I could put the TV on while I set the pool up, and now they're both glued to the box.

I've said they can have one programme each. Wondering if I'm being too strict, completely reasonable or not strict enough.

So, what rules do you have, if any, regarding how much TV your young children watch? Especially if your kids, like mine, would happily watch it all day.

I only have one 3 year old DD and have always been strict about screen time. We have never had a TV anyway (although will watch a film etc on the laptop) as I don't like it just on.

DD can watch something for 45 mins or so at 5pm, and that's it. It works well for us as she would just never ask / whinge about watching something at any other time as it just doesn't happen. Makes my life a lot easier!

My son is five, usually he gets 30 minutes of telly time a day during the week, at the weekend he gets an hour but it can’t be used in one long slot.

Lockdown has been different but my almost 3 yr old gets around 30 mins or so of tv after dinner, before his bath. Weekends might have the off movie. I find a set time of day stops him asking so much at other times, or he’s more willing to accept no when he knows he’ll get some after dinner.
