Baby wearing coat or sling cover?

Indecision2020 · 22/07/2020 09:41

I’m due November and planning to use the sling (ergo omni 360) for the first 6 months as I did with my first child. DC1 was born in spring though so I didn’t really carry him much in bad weather as we mostly used the pram by the time the weather was bad and he was 7/8 months old.

I love being out and about in all weathers so think I need to get either a baby wearing coat or a sling cover (ergo do them and prob others). Can anyone recommend one over the other?

Best thing to get is just an extra big zip up jumper (think like hoodie) and just wrap that around you both and zip up.

I just used my husband's jacket, it buttoned up around me and the baby (October baby). I even managed last winter when he was 1yo.

I had a sling cover and it did not work well at all, although I was using it over a stretchy wrap.

I gad a baby wearing coat with an extra panel that you zipped in to cover the sling. Loved it with a winter baby and can still wear the coat now without the panel!

I have a panel called Zip us In which expands your normal coat. It's cheap and can go in different costs depending on the weather. I got it for £20 at Go Outdoors.

Thanks for the tips!

Sadly DH doesn’t have any spare coats and I suspect he plans to wear his own this winter 🤣. But buying a big cheap hoody could work!

@QuintusEstInHorto where was your coat from?

Will also check out the zip us in panel!

I got one from seraphine that had a removable panel. It was great and I still wear it now as a fleece without the panel.

Mine was from Colline, but I found it on eBay.

I got a Modern Eternity one on ASOS with the reversible zip out panel (one way up for pregnancy, other way for carrying) which was fabulous and mostly waterproof. Friend has one from Verbaudet which copes better with rain but isn't quite as cosy.

For the second baby, knowing I would use the sling a lot, I bought a warm, waterproof baby wearing coat that could do front and back carries. Was worth its weight in gold - I used it in pregnancy and for about two years (until dd2 was a confident walker). It converted with zips to a normal coat, so I could drop at the childminder, turn it into a normal coat, and head off.

Thanks @ThroughThoroughThoughTough that was my thinking too. I loved the sling with DS so want something that will really work well this time round.

ASOS don’t have any baby wearing coats atm sadly. The seraphine and vertbaudet parkas are lovely but expensive! Probably a good investment though.

I had a Susie’s Kindercoat - not beautiful but very practical. And I sold it on for well over half what I’d paid for it new.

Bundle bean - you can use it on front and back carriers and on buggy up to 4 years. Comes in winter (fleece lined) and summer versions. I love mine!
