School Governor Role

Does anyone have experience in being a school governor for their child's primary school?

My sons school is seeking for a parent governor and I'm considering applying, however I'd be keen to hear of others who have done this.

Hi, my experience of this is quite old (approx 15 years) but I was a parent governor at a primary. There was loads of paperwork to read (would all be digital today I’d imagine) but proper chunks of it, not just a small bundle. The full governing meeting was quarterly and the sub committee meetings were monthly. I always found it difficult to get to these meetings in time from work (I always arrived a sweaty late mess!). Then there’s additional stuff like volunteering, observing lessons, being on appeal panels. Something that was described as “just an occasional meeting” turned into a much bigger (4 year) commitment. Given the choice I wouldn’t do it again but that is really because it didn’t suit with me working full time. If I’d been part time or not working it probably would’ve been more fulfilling for the school and me. I’m not seeking to put you off, just being honest about my own personal experience. On the plus side, it’s an interesting role and you learn a lot about how schools operate and funding, etc. Good luck whatever you decide.

Thanks @morningperson, that's interesting. I currently work part time but I also have a 2 year old as well as my 5 year old son so I'll need to consider juggling childcare too. Though I imagine my DH would be supportive.

I'm planning on doing some research online too and will have a chat to the headteacher before I decide.
