5 month old-30 minute naps

Hi
Just wondering if anyone has a little one that has the dreaded x4 30 minute naps a day and if so what age they were when they started to consolidate sleep and if there was anything in particular you did to help? My little boy is just over 5 months old, he will sometimes sleep a little longer if we're out having a walk (an hour if we're lucky) I try to get out with him 1 to 2 times a day. He doesn't wake up grumpy he's quite happy and willing to carry on playing with his toys. Thank you :) xx

This was my little one he is now 6 months old, 2 weeks ago I moved him into his own room for night sleeps and that night he rolled over onto his belly so many times I kept panicking and moving him back in the end I had to sleep and left him too it he can roll both ways no problem. So I started putting him in his cot for day naps and he was doing the same thing but all of a sudden he was sleeping for an hour at a time or sometimes like today we are currently at just over 2 hours.
It doesn't surprise me that he sleeps better this way as both his Dad & I sleep this way he is obviously more comfortable and therefore is consolidating his naps. Night time sleep is better too. I know it's not advised but he can roll both ways and I have both a camera monitor and sensors mat.

My 8 month old never naps for more than 30 minutes and sometimes even just 10 or 15. At most he has 3 naps a day. His 21 month old brother will have at least a 2 hour nap every day. How I wish the little one would do the same. I feel your pain op!

@stressingmum I need to bite the bullet and try him in his cot for daytime naps but I'm always worried for some reason he will get his days and nights mixed up due to the darkness 😂
@toomuchpeppapig wow that doesn't sound great at all, how is his sleep at night??
Thank you for your replies xx

If he does you wake him up after the time you think he needs. I found I use to spend more time trying to get my boy to sleep than he actually slept but now he is so good he just drops off more unless as I put him in the cot.

My 6 month old usually sleeps through (hurrah!) but also has 30 min naps (boooo).

Telling you this partly so I can place mark for any good ideas, but also to let you know that short naps, all in her cot or the buggy, don't seem to screw nighttime sleep.

At the moment I'm just going with it. I've got used to doing household chores very, very quickly.

toomuchpeppapig · 07/07/2020 15:49

He sleeps ok through the night apart from still waking every 4-5 hours for milk. He eats 3 meals, has 2 snacks and 3 bottles in the day as well!

I was considering doing an almost identical post today. DS is 7 months and has 3 naps a day never longer than 40 minutes, usually more like 30. We've tried holding him for the whole nap, rocking him to sleep before putting him in his cot, waiting til he's drowsy then putting him in his cot and shushing/patting him to sleep. Nothing makes any difference. It's like he's got an internal timer! And once he's awake there's no resettling him whether you run upstairs immediately and try and settle him back to sleep, leave him to see if he'll drop back off on his own (he just ends up crying). I also read that they start to sleep for longer as they get older but it doesn't seem to be happening here. He does usually wake up happy but it's sometimes obvious he's still tired and I wish I knew how to get him to sleep for a bit longer!

Dexy2020 · 07/07/2020 16:03

@Sixtonskip our boys sound exactly the same!! He refuses to sleep anywhere other than his pushchair or car seat in the car in the day, he used to sleep in his swing either swinging or still but over the last month just won't at all and no chance he would sleep in his bouncer, I've not really tried the cot properly yet so maybe I ought to try that maybe for the afternoon nap to see if he will settle and maybe sleep longer xx

8 months and now her naps are 1-2 hours

Dexy2020 · 07/07/2020 18:11

@Yorkiee did you do anything different or did it just happen one day? Xx

@Dexy2020 it just happened one day. But like your lo it was 30 minutes and sometimes 20 mins!

She turned 8 months and suddenly she started napping 1-2 hours 3 times a day. So normally morning nap in the mornig is 45 mins. Mid afternoon 1/ 2 hours. Then another 1 hour.

Mid afternoon nap can stretch to 2 hours. It does get better!

Dexy2020 · 07/07/2020 18:26

@Yorkiee that is very reassuring thank you :) does your lo sleep in the cot in the day or?? Xx

@Dexy2020 I used to think when will she start napping for longer. I think the more they move about the more rest they need.

She will only only sleep in her cot! I have one in the living room so put her in there.

Only ever once she fell asleep on her playmat. That was just the one time 😂 x

Sixtonskip · 07/07/2020 21:12

@Dexy2020 I think the cot is definitely worth a try, I always think even if he's only in there 20 mins at least it gives me chance to dash about like a mad thing getting things done!
@Yorkiee your post gives me hope!

Yorkiee · 07/07/2020 21:30

@Dexy2020 aw yes when if I have things to do I just leave her in her cot even if she isn't sleeping. At least then I know she is safe. Just give some toys.

Dexy2020 · 08/07/2020 07:27

I need to try and dummy wean as I'm finding myself doing multiple dummy runs in the night (only has it for naps and bedtime) I'm going to start with the day naps then nights then once that's mastered I will start trying with the cot I think :D xx

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone managed to get their baby to nap for longer?

Currently going through this :(

Val2021 · 09/11/2021 12:10

Same @Trinityhome but he is a great night sleeper - 6.30 till 6 then into our bed where he sleeps for another hour to 90 mins so I’m thinking I should just accept it….
