Toddler with red eye

My DS (2.5) has a constant, slightly red, bloodshot eye.
It's not causing him any pain and he's not rubbing it or anything. He has no problems with his vision in so far as I can tell.
Also it switches sides every so often.
Anyone else had this? What do you think it could be?

Take him to the GP. It may be an allergy, but could be something more serious.
