5 month old wetting through cloth and pampers nappies by 4am

our baby has been waking at 4am every night recently and when I go through he has wet through his nappy and sleeping bag. He only goes to bed at 7!

What do most people suggest? I have tried 2 types of pampers, the premium and stay dry and a tots bots bamboozle and wrap but he still soaked through that last night.

Should I just change him at 10pm when I dream feed him? I don't really want to as he wakes so just wondering what alternatives there are

I sometimes change the nappy in the night without wiping them (if it's just a wee) it helps them go back to sleep

Cherry85 · 05/07/2020 20:20

To everyone saying go up a nappy size.... he is 7kg in a 6 to 10kg nappy? Does that still sound like it could be the issue?

@Cherry85 the bigger nappies also have more absorbant material in to catch wee. I'd buy a cheap pack e.g. of Aldi ones and give the next size up a go at night. It won't be wasted money as they'll eventually need the bigger nappies anyway.

My first would sleep through a nappy change, even a full clothing change no problem. My second, no. So I don't change him unless absolutely necessary (a poo, or a leak). But I didn't change my eldest's nappy at night either!

They aren't really in a wet nappy for 12 hours, because modern nappies wick away moisture so that they aren't bothered by it. They are also asleep which is a bit different to running around. I found Pampers Premium were the best at that age. Now he's older he needs a more absorbent brand. But most nappies do promise 12 hours' dryness on the packaging.

Yes the next nappy size will be something like 8kg+, so worth trying. If they're too big you can just put them away for a few months and he will fit them later.

BikeRunSki · 05/07/2020 20:30

I used cloth nappies by day, and Bambo bamboo nappies at night. They were very absorbent and lasted all night. Pricey, but I only used 1 a day (and on holiday). I bought them online, just google, there are several suppliers.

Indecisivelurcher · 05/07/2020 20:30

Pampers are rubbish!!! Try aldi or even a supermarket own brand, Morrisons are good. And you can get the ones with a + eg 3+ which means extra absorbent (does not slightly bigger!!!) A friend of mine had to put a sanitary towel in her ds's nappy at night, sweats by it 😉

TJ17 · 05/07/2020 20:38

Haven't read the FT so sorry if it's already been suggested but I didn't realise for a very long time with my DS that you need to make sure his penis is pointing downwards in the nappy.

Don't know if this is the issue but it was for me a few times before DH told me 🤦🏼‍♀️ and it never happened since. Seems obvious when you think about it!

Sparrow234 · 06/07/2020 10:41

Go up to the next size at night time

Sparrow234 · 06/07/2020 10:43

I use kit and kin nappies - they come up small so go up a size to normwl. They last all night and are eco / biodegradable / sensitive - they are expensive though - more than pampers! I find it worth it!

Rubyroost · 06/07/2020 10:47

We used sainsburys as every other one leaked

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 06/07/2020 19:11

My DS used to leak out the top of the nappy. He wasn’t soaking the nappy completely through, he just seemed to wee where there wasn’t enough absorbency. Going up a size didn’t help.

We started to buy incontinence pads and stick one inside the front of the nappy, horizontally, to soak up the extra urine. That solved the issue. He eventually grew out of it.

mummyoneboy19 · 06/07/2020 23:03

I second Little Lamb bamboo nappies, boosted with either a Little Lamb triple layer booster or a Kit&Kin tencel and hemp booster - or alternatively try a littlepants superpee bamboo terry? I like Petit Lulu pull up covers for over night nappies but I’m about to venture into the world of wool!

Hope you get it sorted soon, my boy is also a very heavy wetter!

@ExhaustedBeyondBelief

So you would wake a sleeping baby to change them? Bizarre.

DontWantToAdult · 06/07/2020 23:49

@2155User

I would not leave a baby in the same nappy for 12 hours

DontWantToAdult · 06/07/2020 23:50

@2155User

So guess im the same....

Why would you leave a baby in the same nappy for that long?

INeedNewShoes · 07/07/2020 00:00

I find Pampers absolutely crap at holding everything in. Asda own brand, Tesco own brand are much better than Pampers at a fraction of the price.

Also, make sure you always untuck the leg frills so that they stick out of the nappy and penis pointing down.

I can't believe posters are suggesting waking a baby purely to change their nappy! DD slept 11pm until 6am from 4 months and absolutely now way would I have thought it necessary to wake her just for a wet nappy. Obviously if she'd soaked through then I would but otherwise, no!

2155User · 07/07/2020 14:06

@DontWantToAdult

Because DS goes to bed at 7pm and doesn’t wake up until 7am and there is absolutely no chance whatsoever I’m waking a sleeping baby.

Nappies are much much much better designed than they used to be and in big bold letter it says “12 hours” on them.

I think if you did a poll, you would be in the minority

DontWantToAdult · 07/07/2020 15:15

@2155User

Minority or not.

People are allowed to do what they want.

You dont, fine!

Itisbetter · 07/07/2020 15:18

I wouldn’t leave a baby in a nappy for 12 hours either. I’m not sure why that would be a good idea.

Itisbetter · 07/07/2020 15:20

@DontWantToAdult i don’t think you’re in the minority. I think it’s more that people are uncomfortable thinking they do things differently and want to maintain they are “normal” and your are “weird”.

BertieBotts · 07/07/2020 16:04

I think changing nappies at night beyond the newborn period and without necessity is bizarre, never heard of it before this thread.

But now I'm starting to question if I'm in the minority!

I read this book that suggested setting an alarm to take your (sleeping) toddler to the potty in the middle of the night during potty training. I had never heard of that before either. Are these the same people?

DS1 is nearly 12 so I might just be incredibly out of date.

PinkDaffodil2 · 07/07/2020 16:08

Are you boosting your bamboozle? We use little lambs and at night she has a giant bum because of the extra boosting (either hemp or triple thickness bamboo). We went up to size 2 reusable overnight very early and now using size 3 LL at night as she’s 11.5kg at 1 year old.

Ginandtonic31 · 07/07/2020 16:31

@BertieBotts apparently my mum used to do this with me 33 years ago - put me on the loo on my sleep when she went to bed! Who knew!
